Stewart Downing

Preferred destination is Newcastle but Liverpool will let him go for as little as £5 million. Who would take him?

He just needs a new start - get some confidence back. I'd have him here.

Most certainly. Great performances for Liverpool in the second half of last season.

Was great for Boro and Villa, was bought in the Dalgish/Comolli regime which was always going to end in tears, I'd take him here in a heartbeat.

God I remember when Lennie Lawrence tried to bring him here on loan when he was a teenage star @ Middlesbrough. Missed out on him but got Paul Parry instead :D

At £5m he must be worth a punt.

Def... Second half of season both him and Henderson played quite decent!

£5m is about right for Downing. Good player would be an ideal signing :ayatollah:

Reports have surfaced that Liverpool have offered Newcastle United 29-year old English winger Stewart Downing at a discounted rate.

Newcastle United have reportedly been told they can sign Liverpool winger Stewart Downing for a mere £5 million, which would put his current club at a massive loss from the £20 million they spent to bring him in from Aston Villa two years ago.

The English winger is 29-years old, which puts him outside of the typical signing for the Toon, but at a £5 million tag he might be worth the money as the Magpies could use help at the winger position.

The Toon have also been linked to Tom Ince, who would seem to cost just £3 million more than Downing, but is also just 21 years old. Downing's wages are also likely to be high, but it appears Liverpool want him gone at a discount rate and Downing wants to continue getting first team minutes.

He played in the team's first three friendlies but has been an unused substitute in their last two friendlies.

Apparently he rejected West Ham because they only offered him £40k pw...

Despite the fact he's a good player, surely we'd be insane to pay the £50k odd that he'd want.

Liverpool's Stewart Downing in transfer talks with West Ham.. and Kop will pay him to go
9 Aug 2013 22:30
Proposed £6m move could be sorted in next few days PLUS Barca target Agger named vice-captain and Cissokho latest

West Ham have made a shock £6million move to sign Liverpool winger Stewart Downing.

Former Middlesbrough wideman turned down a switch down south to Upton Park earlier this summer.

But the Hammers have come back in and the 29-year-old - a £20m
capture from Aston Villa just two years ago - is set to cut his losses after failing to establish himself at the Anfield giants.

The transfer fee, which could rise to £6m based his on appearances for the Londoners, would represent a massive loss for Liverpool who have also written off £20m in selling Andy Carroll to West Ham this summer.

But Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is staging a clear-out of players deemed to have no future at the club as he reshapes the squad for a tilt at a Champions League place over the coming campaign.

Talks between West Ham and Downing are at an advanced stage over terms, with one of the stumbling blocks being the player's wages of around £80,000 a week.

But Liverpool are prepared to pay up some of his remaining contract to facilitate the deal, and it could be finalised as early as next week.
