we have beaten that attendence for the 3rd tier of the football league on at least 2 occassions away to QPR 48000 and the league record of 51626 against Bristol City at home in our promotion year 1946- 47

But not since inception of present structure! The Sheffield derby holds it.

Its because they play in blue! Don't forget some of our supporters wish we were where they are now!
Because they kept their colours.

In the present structure neither Sheffield clubs have been in league 2 and Wednesday have never been in the 4th tier (4th Division) of English football in the old structure. United have only one season in the 4th tier in the old structure, season 1981/82 and they were promoted as champions. The Sheffield derby did hold the record for the old third division 49,309 at Hillsborough on Boxing Day 26/12/1979 when Wednesday won 4-0 and since that day in Sheffield it has been known as the "Boxing Day Massacre". Not sure if it still does.
