Cardiff Target Rampaging Right-Back Who Lit Up Ligue 1 Last Season. Transfer Scouting Report
By Dan TalintyrePosted on August 1, 2013
The new-boys of the English Premier League, Cardiff City, already made a huge splash this summer when they signed FC Copenhagen striker Andreas Cornelius for £8.5 million. Now, according to reports from Sky Sports, it seems that the Bluebirds are in the running to make their second big signing, with highly-rated French defender Anthony Reveillere touted as a potential free transfer target for manager Malky Mackay.

The 33-year-old Reveillere packs a wealth of experience throughout both Ligue 1, the Champions League and international football, and would naturally be a great addition in terms of wisdom and knowledge to Cardiff’s dressing room. However, the signing of Reveillere would be for more than just his experience, with the former Lyon man potentially becoming one of Cardiff’s most important players in the year ahead.

Reveillere doesn’t carry with him the reputation that other defenders have in Ligue 1, but he’s no less influential down the right flank. In Lyon’s team last season, the French international won more duels than any other defender and created more chances than any other defender as well – ranking eighth across the entire league for total chances created. He’s no Leighton Baines or Philipp Lahm, but Reveillere still offers a great presence on the right hand side of the field going forward.

It’s surprising, really, that his attacking presence doesn’t gather the same notoriety that others have – such as Marseille defender Rod Fanni or incredibly-hyped Lille defender Lucas Digne. Both of those players are recognised as great attacking players, but as Squawka’s player comparison shows, Reveillere was actually a better attacker and passer of the ball last season than either player.

Reveillere achieved essentially the same performance score for the year as Fanni—which was far better than that of Digne—and created more goal-scoring chances despite playing less games in the season. His pass completion percentage was also better than the other two defenders.

However, one of Reveillere’s greatest strengths is his ability to have such a great attacking presence without neglecting any of his defensive responsibilities. The Frenchman is a prolific tackler (winning 86% of his tackles last season) and is very strong in the air as well (winning 79% of his aerial duels). Last year, he also averaged five defensive actions per game.

In his best performance of the season against Reims (where Lyon won 3-0), Reveillere was everywhere down the right flank. His individual pass map shows just how influential he was going forward, but it’s also incredibly important to note that the 33-year-old also chalked up three interceptions and a tackle as well that game—making sure that he was fulfilling his primary responsibility as a defender.

For the new kids on the block, Reveillere would be a great asset to have.

He would likely feature on the right hand side of the field (but could also play left-back if needed) and would quickly form a great combination with the electric wingers the Bluebirds already have in their squad.

Both Peter Whittingham and Nicky Maynard are confident finishers who are more than capable of taking chances when provided—which is exactly what Reveillere could provide for Cardiff in 2013—all without forsaking any of the defensive tasks assigned to him on the day.
