A forum for all things Cardiff City

Just a weird one that alot of Newport lads have talked about. There's pockets of Cardiff fans living in Newport, and of course up in Cwmbran (inbredland), but what are your opinions of Cardiff City fans who are from Newport?
I spoke to a Merthyr Town fan years ago, and he says it annoys him that a lot of Merthyr boys are skipping their home town, and opting to support Cardiff City - and some Swansea City.
I would prefer to see Swansea and Cardiff fans about Newport than Liverpool and Manchester United, but in all seriousness it's a bit of a liberty if you don't support your home town, especially when you know your home town has a massive rivalry with the town next door. I work with a lot of Cardiff City fans in St. Mellons, and they remember the 80's rivalry with Newport County, and due to the closeness of our cities, it was MASSIVE. I'd say 1/6 of Newport supports Cardiff City (from plastic to hardcore), and only 1/3 supports Newport County.
Good luck to Swansea City & Cardiff City in the Premier League, do Wales proud, but if we get you in the FA Cup, or Carling Cup, make sure your stewards and local police try to contain us this time so we don't have to smash up pubs again. (FAW Premier Cup at Ninian Park).

Would rather be a plastic in Wales and support Cardiff than support any of the bigger teams, understand local football is on its bare bones for some clubs but I appreciate the Valleys support. Can't blame people from Newport supporting County but if we ever meet again it will make for some good banter

See I think at Newport County we have driven a lot of Valley boys away as we have in the past sung anti-Valley boy songs which of course were aimed at the "Cardiff" fans who weren't from the 'Diff. I would love all 3 of our South Wales cities to be fighting in the Prem, and with our wealthy backer, I can see us staying in League 2. Love the fact the majority of our squad are Welsh players who are generally hungry to get a Welsh club back up the Football Leagues, and for 3 of them their home town.

Wales has had an amazing season, and with 2 Prem sides, Merthyr nearly promoted, and the Blue Square Premier Play-Off Final between Newport and Wrexham, things are looking up.

I worked at Llanwern for 6 years. Newport people over 50 and under 30 tended to supper Newport County and Cardiff City. Middle aged Newport People tended to support Liverpool and hate Cardiff.

Spoke to Newport boy, and ex-Cardiff City player James Collins months ago, and he was telling me how he used to support Liverpool, and during school everyone followed Liverpool AND Newport County. I think when Newport County had to re-build after going bust, we lost a generation of supporters. Glad to rapid promotions have won over our own city, finally.
I remember in 95' the day Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown wore a South Wales Echo Cardiff City shirt - on stage in Newport, and got booed off stage.

Oh Im from Cwmbran inbred land WTF that's more like Pontnewydd.
Thu Aug 01, 2013 12:22 pm
I'm a Cwmbran lad as well, and I cannot get over the fact that someone from Newport calls us inbred???
Newport thinks very highly of themselves. You've never been considered a serious rival of Cardiff! You claim to fame is turning up in a meaningless competition where we had no interest.
Hardly something to shout about but, each to their own
Thu Aug 01, 2013 12:27 pm
It's all about supporting your local professional Club.
So if they live in Newport, then they have to support Cardiff don't they
Thu Aug 01, 2013 12:32 pm
i suppose it depends on how far you take it, if everyone supported their local teams then Trelewis would have a few hundred watching them every week as would all the local clubs spread around South wales.

All about banter kid.

Oakfield is just as bad as Ringland. I'm lucky I live in a posh part of Newport - yes, it actually exists!

Back in the 80's we had a huge rivalry with Cardiff City so I've been told. Alot of the 80's County lot went missing for 10 years and have only just popped up now, guess they couldn't bare to watch us in Non-League. We've done alright for ourselves, and seeing as we still have the "fan-power", we hope to smash Swansea City aside with their version, and of course we've already done Wrexham - on a sunny day at Wembley.

Cardiff City lads know that Newport County's lot are nothing to turn your nose up at. Wales away days, Cardiff City have even been out-numbered, true story! Still though, be nice if more Jacks came to Wales away days. Probably because you 'orrible bastards.

When I started following City there was only one division between Merthyr and Cardiff but the experience was a million miles apart.
Merthyr had crowds of 4/500 whilst my first game with City was Hereford away in 1992 and we took 4000, then the following week my first home game against Burnley there was 16,000 there.
I used to go to watch Merthyr as a kid now and again, midweek mainly as I always went to watch my dad play local league on a Saturday afternoon, but I never really cared win, lose or draw. Never got the bug like I did with the City.
Going to watch Merthyr was no different to going to watch my dads football team, Gellidaeg, who could pull in a hundred or so from the estate on a Saturday afternoon.
City was a different ball game, there was something much more special about a 3pm Saturday, football league game, travelling to another part of the country on the train, with new mates you hade made from another part of south wales, getting wrecked, getting into scrapes. Even travelling down on the train and walking up Riverside to the home games just made it feel all more special than jumping the fence down your local non league football club.
Anyway, I wouldnt have met my good mate, and best man at my wedding, Nanny Mcphail, if it hadnt been for the Merthyr contingent travelling down to the City on the Valley Line

Hiya mate which part of the port you from? Personally I was born/raised in newport but my dad is Cardiff born and bred and I have always followed them. Got nothing against County though, if we played each other i'd have to stay neutral though!

Originally from Bettws mate, now live in Bovis Homes near Duffryn. I'd love to see Cardiff City do well, but of course I'd love us to stuff them, and the Jacks.

I've always been loyal to the County, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Newport Lad
I've supported Cardiff when we were having crowds of 3000. Im a valley boy too originally and had an hours train journey to see us in old 4th and 3rd divisions.
Cardiff and the valleys were both rammed with LFC,MUFC, Arsenal -a bit of leeds, forest, spurs and man city -and I was often teased for supporting Cardiff by armchair fans when I caught the local boozers after coming back from a City game.
there were hardly any jacks around - none to be seen in most areas, this has changed since they got into prem though.
Personally (even though you, the jacks and wurzels are our rivals) I would rather a jack/townie/wurzel fan (who goes to games) than a person who has almost never been to a game and supports teams from 100's of miles away cos they were on top when his dad was a lad.
I cant stand armchair fans looking down at fans who spend time and money following their local teams.
I cant see a problem with pockets of CCFC in newput, the same that there is a pocket of jacks in pencoed or Merthyr nowadays.
the days of scrapping like fuk with each other are gone now - just stories and keyboards now - good days though in some respects

The biggest support you lost was in Monmouthshire, which played a big role in Newport support in the past. Now you will either find fans from within these areas either supporting Cardiff or Bristol City and a small minority Newport.
There is a big difference between our clubs; you will find that Cardiff City do significant community work within Cwmbran; Monmouthshire, Cardiff, Bridgend and the Valleys. The continuous engagement with schools and the local community is generating interest regarding the club; which is making a positive impact.
Our community programmes have received recognition in football league awards, and as a club we are regarded the best in Wales and the South West. For Newport to progress as a club, its not all about Football, they really need to get involved in the local community and raise the profile of the area.

afraid to say bu newport are no longer our rivals, i doubt will ever be like the 80's again either.
Amazes me just how many city fans are from newport, quite a lot. How can you call Cwmbran
inbred? Newport is such a dump of a place which is widely ridiculed, most people dont even have
teeth do they? talk about hills have eyes....glad your back in the league though
also, when we were in league 1 or 2 we had lots of welsh players too, its difficult to get them
the higher you go....not many gareth bales and ramseys about....

I know the ones "Celtic Horizons" lol, the posh part of Duffryn. I live in new new houses by the riverside. We will have to set up a car share for the matches mate!

And We Want It. credit due but they got destroyed. when you came to ours two year ago it was all over for
us. i was over my ban but got fucked off by police anyway. they were wrapping up all our young lot to, So
your biggest game for twenty years and you brought a mob. thrilling.

I'm Cardiff born and bread and I've always thought of cardiff the football club and the city in general, as representing much more than just cardiff itself. it represents a much wider area, a big part to play was the coal industry of south wales I suppose. it was brought down from the surrounding valleys and shipped out from cardiff docks, so you had a big link between cardiff and the valleys which has never gone away, so its only natural that a big portion of our support comes from outside of cardiff and is seen as a the local club for the surrounding valleys
Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:46 pm
When I first went down the city in the 70's there was lots of fans from Newport supporting city, remember stopping off going to Orient to pick up a city fan from Newport who lived in a garage, don't know where all the bad feeling come from ,although the only team I can't stick is Swansea.

f*cking hell I'm from Oakfield. It's one the better areas of Cwmbran. Thorn hill is the scummy area of Cwmbran. Pill is the biggest shithole in Newport.
Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:54 pm
When I started supporting City.
There was no Newport County, Newport AFC were playing in Gloucester at a level slightly higher than Cromwell/Albion Rovers.
There has long been a tidy City following in Newport, the brief rivalry is done and I can see fans watching both City and The County.
Thu Aug 01, 2013 2:29 pm
I'm a 'Port boy originally but have also lived in Cwmbran. My family are generally from Cardiff though. I'm a City fan but I hope the County do well. Similarly, I used to watch out for Cwmbran Town's results back in the League of Wales 90s heyday, when their star striker was none other than my namesake - Matthew Davies!

I'm one of these CITY fans from Newport, born in the Celtic Manor and was schooled in Bassaleg BUT I spent the vast majority of my younger days with the family who were from Splott, Llanederyn and Pentwyn. My parents moved to Newport just before I was born and I travelled daily with my mother to drop Dad to work at East Moors Steelworks everyday often staying at grandparents and hanging around with Cardiff lads. So all of my family were City fans and my cousin Ritchie Morgan played and managed (even though Peter his brother played for the County) the side with my brother there as an apprentice too before moving on to Newport and so I have never felt any affiliation with County at all.....it did mean I spent the vast majority of my school days having the piss ripped out of me but you soon toughen up when your the only one of a kind in a big crowd.
The only time it ever got particularly troublesome was one afternoon walking through John Frost square past Blake's pub (yes Nathan's) and 4 of us Newport dwelling City fans were spotted and chased through town after being showered with bricks and full cans of beer.....other than that always had good banter with most County lads and theyve appreciated why I have always followed City. I think you'll find a lot of people from the Bassaleg, Rhiwderin and Marshfield (and Castleton Annis) areas support City as their families have moved from Cardiff to a decent area which was cheaper at the time
Thu Aug 01, 2013 4:05 pm
Glory hunters from Cardiff had no excuse in the past, if all the manutd and scouser fans supported City, we would have had 50, 000 in the old div 4.
But I can understand people from the valleys supporting their local side as being Cardiff... one because it is on their doorsrep and the likes of Merthyr could not get into the prem because of population and money support from outside.
As for newport, they were a rival in the 80s but the hatred went beyond football. Now like swansea they may turn up at wales games, now its all over. When it was big, we nearly always had the advantage.
Thu Aug 01, 2013 4:30 pm
Always been a few City fans from Newport, & like you said, specially from the Cwmbran, Pontypool area.
Having said that, the combined total of Liverpool/ Man Utd fans from the Newport area pretty much total more than NCFC fans could ever muster to your home games. Sad fact i know, & its going to take Newport County to do really well over the next decade or two, to turn around.
Best of luck!
Thu Aug 01, 2013 4:32 pm
I am originally fr Cwmbran but have been living in Newport since I was young, my dads Cardiff, my Grandads Cardiff so I've taken that on too! I think that with Newport the standard of football growing up wasn't as good as Cardiff, going to Ninian Park too was something special!!
