Wales will break new ground with their first-ever international at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday 26th September 2013.
The match will be against Belarus in a qualifying match for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Also in the group are England, Turkey, Ukraine and Montenegro. The matches will be played over the next eighteen months, with the goal to reach Canada in the summer of 2015 for the finals tournament.
Wales has met Belarus twice before in the Women’s World Cup tournament. First in Mogilev in October 1997 when the home side won 4-1 and then in the return match at Bridge Meadow, Haverfordwest, when the match was drawn 3-3. Goalscorers from those matches were Debbie Gunn (in Belarus) and Jayne Ludlow, Ayshea Martyn and Ceryl Jones in Haverfordwest.
The Wales team has recently risen to their highest-ever FIFA and UEFA ranking positions after a very strong showing in the recent European Championship qualifiers that saw wins over the Republic of Ireland and Israel (twice), plus a draw with Scotland. The team also gave eventually group winners, France, two very difficult matches.
