Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay vows to keep chasing top targets like Etienne Capoue and Hector Moreno
The Bluebirds boss is now looking to close in on European hot-shots Etienne Capoue and Hector Moreno as he readies his squad for the Premier League.
Malky Mackay has vowed to keep pushing to sign top quality players in his bid to establish Cardiff City at Premier League level.
The Bluebirds manager is today hoping to close in on Frenchman Etienne Capoue and Mexican defender Hector Moreno.
There has not been any official word from Cardiff, but they are determined to strengthen their squad with Capoue and Moreno high on their priority list.
Celtic’s Victor Wanyama and Tom Ince, Blackpool’s talented winger, were £10m transfer targets for the Bluebirds, but they fell through.
City turned their focus away from Wanyama and enquired about Toulouse midfield player Capoue , but that went public and attracted interest from more top clubs with Athletico Madrid making an enquiry.
That competition, though, will not put off the determined Mackay and negotiations continue.
City are also being linked with a move for Mexican centre-back Moreno , who plays for Espanyol in La Liga.
It looks certain Mackay will press ahead with bids to bring Capoue and Moreno to Cardiff, although City know how tough it can be to finalise deals at Premier League level.
Mackay prefers to push ahead with transfer business quietly and efficiently. He showed that when £8.5m centre-forward Andreas Cornelius arrived out of the blue from FC Copenhagen.
It’s been a frustrating time for Mackay and his head of recruitment Iain Moody as they work to strengthen City’s squad.
But the Bluebirds boss will not lower his sights in any way as he looks to bring the best talent available to his squad.
There is more than a month until the transfer window closes and Mackay, have no doubt, will use that to the full if needs be.
He will not be rushed into panic signings and that is shown by the structured way he approaches every move he makes.
Possible targets are watched time and again with Mackay going through reports on ability and background before he watches the player himself.
Finally, Mackay sends a full dossier on the player to Malaysian investor Vincent Tan before an official approach is made.
Mackay wants several more players yet in defence and midfield and would not rule out a move for a striker of the right calibre.
Cornelius and right-back John Brayford, City’s £1.3m signing from Derby, are confirmed signings, while Cardiff will land 23-year-old Brentford keeper Simon Moore early next week.
Mackay is still hopeful of signing Capoue.
When Cardiff initially enquired about the midfield enforcer they were told Toulouse value him at 11m Euros.
Mackay would still want to bring in the powerful midfield player to his squad and will do everything he can to reach agreement.
Toulouse chairman Olivier Sadran claims Cardiff's offer for Capoue is the best they have received and that looks a bid to bring other clubs in.
Sadran said: “The clubs interested in Etienne have to know we will not accept any offer inferior to the one from Cardiff.”
It’s also clear City are keen on Moreno.
The Espanyol defender, who played against Wales last year, has attracted strong interest from Premier League rivals Cardiff and Swansea.
The Swans are reported to have offered £6m for Moreno, but Espanyol want £8m.
Former AZ Alkmaar defender Moreno impressed for Mexico against Chris Coleman's Wales in New York during 2012.
He was a key player as Alkmaar won the Dutch League title before he made the move to La Liga and Espanyol.
The 25-year-old Moreno played in the last World Cup for Mexico and has earned 46 caps for his country.
There is no doubt City are still in the hunt for French international Capoue, whose agent has said they are to open talks with the Bluebirds.
Cardiff face a tussle with Atletico Madrid for Capoue, but believe he would improve their squad and are prepared to battle the whole way.
