' SAM HAMMAM SPEAKS OUT '

Wed Jul 24, 2013 5:53 am

24th July 2013.

' Sam Hammams first interview in 7 years.'

The call came mid-morning. Sam Hammam, Cardiff City’s new life president, who has barely said a word publicly for seven years, wanted to talk less than 24 hours after concluding a deal with major Malaysian investor Vincent Tan over the £24m Langston loan notes.

We met at Holland House Hotel in Cardiff, Hammam strolling into reception and warmly shaking my hand. There is still that same old sparkle in his eyes and the passion he has for football and the Bluebirds seems as intense as ever.

Say what you like about the Lebanese businessman, but he loves his football and has stayed in touch with City fans. Many get on with him, though some do not.

But there is a change in him from days of old.

Where Hammam the City owner was always full of himself and his bold predictions, he is now ready to play a supporting role to the new ace in the pack – majority shareholder Tan.

Time and again Hammam refused to talk about himself, saying: “This is not about me. We are now in Vincent Tan’s era and must respect that.”

Hammam’s new role makes him an ambassador, a figurehead, for City. He won’t have a say on football matters, doesn’t have a seat on the board, but he does have the ear of club owner Tan.

“If he asks my opinion or I have a view then we will talk,” said Hammam. “But if Vincent Tan disagrees, wants to turn left when I suggest going straight ahead, I will follow him.

“I stress we must all get behind our leader.

“This man is a winner. In life when you see a winner you go with the winner. We need him to win for us as long as he can.”

Hammam is the new Cardiff City life president. And in this case, he says, life means life.

“This is my right, not something which has been bestowed on me,” said Hammam. “It is a ceremonial role, but I am a figurehead for the club. Vincent Tan leads the way and I will back him in any way I can.”

It has taken a long, long time for Tan and Hammam to reach unison over solving the Langston debt. The two men have met, they have chatted by telephone and stayed in regular contact.

“I have got to know our owner reasonably well,” said Hammam.

“Not only have I dealt with him on business, but we have had long discussions on a variety of topics relating to the club and the future.

“This is his time to write a chapter in our club’s history.

“My experience is that he is a unique man. I can say he is an enigma in the sense that he can be one thing – and can also be the opposite at the same time. “He is a man who can be as hard as a diamond or as soft as putty. These are the extremes.

“When he is hard, Vincent Tan is the ace of diamonds, where he is soft he is the ace of hearts.

“What we would like is for him to be our ace of diamonds when we are against opposition, whether in buying players, playing against Premier League clubs or anything of a practical business nature.

“When it comes to internal matters we want him to be the ace of hearts. The way to get your point across and change things is to appeal to his heart, his personality.

“If we truly want Cardiff City to achieve success and help the club realise its great potential we have to capture this great man, make him love us and help him love our club.

“Only by showing respect, appreciation and love are we going to get the best out of Vincent Tan.

“Only by doing that are we going to achieve our dreams. People believe our dream is to reach the Premier League. No sir.

“We want to be playing at the top level consistently if we can.

“Our aim must be to be playing in the highest echelons or the Premier League in a stadium to match, with a team to match. There is a long way to go, a lot of work to do, but we are looking to build.

“To do that we need somebody to carry us and this man can do that.”

Hammam believes the respect for Tan from City followers must stretch further than what he can give them financially.

“Our task is to show him we are not only after his money. We can’t just keep saying ‘give us, give us, give us’ and when we finish milking him tell him to get lost and make him a villain,” he said.

“Demonstrations to oust our leader and then move on to the next sucker won’t work.

“If you can’t get the next sucker in we go back to the lower divisions. Nobody wants that.

“We have to show we are not looking at a cash cow who we milk until there is none left. We must make him feel we are part of him and he is part of us. He must feel safe with us, wanted with us, important to us.

“He must feel his investment in Cardiff City is secure with us if he backs us and that it is not going down the drain.”

Hammam did not want to discuss details of the deal which brings him back to the club as life president. The reported cash payment is £15m-plus, while Michael Filiou, an accountant and long-term associate of Hammam, will have a seat on the board of directors.

The details were finalised and approved during a meeting of directors plus Tan and Hammam conducted by conference telephone call this week. Tan and some directors were in the Far East, Hammam in England and some directors in Wales.

The deal was concluded and signed on Monday and Tan has agreed to turn his loans, which total £37m-plus, into club shares.

He has said for a long time that when the Langston debt was solved he would do that and Hammam says: “I believe our owner is about to turn his loans into equity. I believe he is going to render our club debt free.

“Look at what he has already done for Cardiff City. He saved the club from certain administration, he has and is improving the capacity and quality of the stadium, improved the pitch and he got the rugby out.

“We like that sport. Certainly we are not anti-rugby, but playing rugby for a Premier League club does not work.

“Vincent Tan also financed the achievement of promotion, while he did not make the mistake I did, which was my only mistake when I was owner.

“He has made the administration of the club his own, made essential changes. If you want to move forward you must know the people with you are behind you.”

After an hour and a half it was time for Hammam to leave. There is no doubt his passion for the Bluebirds remains.

He will be attending City’s Premier League matches on a regular basis and is intent on being at West Ham on the opening day.

“We need a massive overhaul in our team and only have one new signing (Andreas Cornelius) so far. I have my own ideas on what we need, but that is my personal opinion and I keep that to myself.

“Malky Mackay and his staff will make those decisions. We all wish him every success.”

For all his faults and mistakes (yes there were more than one) I'll always have gratitude towards Sam Hammam. He was the original pioneer who began the modern golden era that we have enjoyed now for over 10 years and more.

I know this post will attract the usual "but he threatened to put the club in administration" "spent money he had borrowed" etc. but the fact is he NEVER put the club into administration and has taken a huge knock on the money he overspent.

When I think back to the late 90's when another false dawn (promotion from the dungeon to what is now League 1) was followed by the usual relegation back I thank my lucky stars that SH intervened and stopped that perennial bobbing up and down and set us on a course which now means we are a Premiership club playing in a fantastic new stadium with a realistic chance of being debt free for the first time in a generation.

OK he didn't finish the job, but he certainly was there at the beginning and that has to be the hardest part.

Can't really say I feel the same about Sams return than I did over the rebrand.

I gave the rebrand a go last season and although if I'm honest I knew what the result would be for me, I am willing to give Sam another go here although it is under different circumstances. I do feel though that the outcome will be a lot more positive than the rebrand.

Totally agree Ian, Sam coming back is nothing compared to the Rebrand .

Sam made mistakes when he was in charge and as long as he has no finacial contract at the club I welcome him back .I think this type of roll to Tan was missing Tan defo needs a football man to advise him and Sam knows football and CCFC very very well so good news to me .

Also v good news the debt has gone at last and it seems VT will now make his debts to equity so we will be in the prem debt free which is a dream come true.

One scar on the landscape for me is the rebrand a massive f**k up from VT and Sam says we got to respect and love VT BUT FOR ME if he hadnt rebranded us I would of .I will never love him for rebranding us and in the end it will be VTS only massive f**k up he will never have total respect from lots of fans until he changes us back to blue which will never happen .

Could of been perfect but not for me sorry the debt going i am very happy and well done VT.

If I'm honest I never liked the murkiness of the Langston affair, but now it's sorted out. I'm a great believer of second chances. I have no problem with Sam being part of our club.

Re: SAM HAMMAM SPEAKS OUT

Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:56 am

So we have a new mascot at the club Sam hamman, from time to time he will advise Tan on the best way forward although Tan will not always take his advise. Our new mascot also knows what players we need to take us forward but will not tell Malky how to run/pick the side or what players to bring in.This guy takes us to the brink of destruction with dept then has the cheek to come back as are lucky mascot/I know what the club needs but will not interfere sort of guy, pull the other one. ;)

I think Tan has done a good job at the club but bring this guy back is a step back to the dark days. And stop saying we Sam as you are not part of anything in my eyes.

Westham away, will our new mascot be walking behind the goals buy any chance. :laughing6:

What an embarrassing load of old shite. Spin, rhetoric, blah blah blah. Could he get his tongue any
further up Vincent Tans arse. The ONLY use Hammam could be to Cardiff City supporters is to get
his ''lifelong buddy'' to change us back to Blue. Obviously thats not going to happen cos of Sams 'respect'
for the DIAMOND

"many get on with him - but some do not"

Erm..... you got that the wrong way round

The odious creep STILL has the front to talk about his ''mistakes'' - and not his lies.

He never took us into administration? :? Vincent Tan SAVED us from administration and we
were heading there like a runaway train DIRECTLY BECAUSE of Sam Hammam

Oh and if i see one more post saying its good to have his football knowledge on board I'm
going to bit my own hand off. The man spent a fortune on average players and PAID them
a fortune - guess what happened next

The minute he starts chopsing off about players is the minute Malky Mackay will walk out
that door. Keep your mouth SHUT Hammam

Football knowledge  I think some would prefer him in the hot seat as opposed to Malky. I read this morning he has never been relegated. :laughing6:

Welcome back Sam Hammam. A well deserved life Presidency in my opinion. His call for respect for Tan is a right one.
Too many no marks who are ill informed and not privy to what goes on behind closed doors concerning the running of the club, post diatribe and insults on message boards.
A new era in the club has started, long may it be successful.

Oh God help us   Been listening to the disciples have we?

One question.

When Sam took out over £30m in loans against Cardiff City but told us he was spending his own money

Was it a lie - or a mistake

No doubt he nearly took us under but he also started the dream and without him starting it, we would not be here today. He's given me some of my best memory's as a Cardiff fan and you can see he loves the city and football club. He obviously made mistakes but I don't think people should abuse him to his face etc, after all the guy is human and in fairness pretty old now. He's here to help us in whatever way he can and I'm glad he's back and also glad the debt is sorted.

Sam started this dream and tan is finishing it. As long as Sam is kept away from the money side of things I'm happy. I've done wrong in my life and people have given me a 2nd chance and I'm a changed man now. People deserve 2nd chances and lets give Sam this opportunity and welcome him and make him feel wanted again. I did something stupid at an away game and got banned for 3 years and I've been given another chance to watch Cardiff and I wouldn't make that mistake again. Sam should be given another chance too. If you don't agree that's up to you, but nobody should abuse him. That's just my opinion :ayatollah: :malky:

The man took us to court had he won we may well have gone bust. Even the Judge was convinced of severe mal- practice. He demanded £500.000 before letting go and allowing the club to move forward. If he is genuine why didn't he accept 15million then no he demanded 24. it goes on and on. Finally biggest insult of all. "WE HAD NO HISTORY UNTIL HE CAME ALONG" . THE MAN LIED AND LIED full stop. trust a thief never a liar.

Now with his own words he has just said Vincent Tan SAVED Cardiff City from Sam Hammam!!

Couldnt stop laughing through out  Thinking he deserves the life president title and only making one mistake :laughing6:

He should just stay away and leave it all in the past for all of us. As for people suggesting he never took us into administration well neither did Ridsdale, its not something we should be proud of

so Hammam is telling us, we 'must' follow Tan???

Sam, listen... I MUST die one day, that's all I must...

No questions bout the rebrand? That is (still) the #1 topic, didnt Sam want to speak about that? Very strange...

Sam, Riddler and now Tan... I trust these 'businessmen' as far as I could throw them... they are here for one thing, and one thing only: MONEY

lying tw@ts, that's what they are to me...

Maybe Tan has invited Sam to be his right-hand man. Mission is to re-form an new army to back Tan's existing and future ideas and to persuade fans such as Barry Chuckles and Bakedalasker to be leaders of this new army, a new regime.

When he told Annis to ''shut up about the rebrand'' a few weeks ago - he meant forever, not just for the day.
He has pretty much coated Tans cock in saliva in this interview. Reading between the lines he is passing on
Tans message 'respect me or i'll leave' to Bluebirds Unite.

We should get him a t shirt made up - Tans My Daddy, dont diss my Daddy
