Timely honour for billionaire

BERJAYA Corporation Berhad founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of South Wales in the United Kingdom (UK).

The university honoured Tan, a businessman and entrepreneur, with an honorary doctorate on Thursday.

“It is indeed a privilege for me to receive this honorary doctorate from the University of South Wales. To be conferred this award adds greatly to my joy and deepens the affinity I have for Cardiff and the university,” said Tan who is also the owner of Cardiff City Football Club.

Attributing his success to aptitude and hard work, Tan, who is in Forbes’ list of billionaires in Malaysia, said that since he was from a poor family, the focus then was to earn a living.

Despite lacking proper tertiary education, he was ambitious and at 21, became the youngest insurance agent with American International Assurance.

His tenacity, persistence and determination saw him through the early years and brought him success in the business world where he diversified into consumer marketing, financial services, property investment and development, resorts and recreation, education, media, and telecommunications amongst others.

Today, Berjaya Corporation is one of the largest business groups in Malaysia with over 30,000 employees and combined revenues in excess of £5bil (RM24bil).

Also known for his charitable deeds, Tan set up the VTCY Foundation in 1995 (now known as Better Malaysian Foundation) to provide aid and relief for medical, educational and environmental purposes.

One of Tan’s biggest projects in education is in helping to improve the standard of English in the country.

Together with non-profit organisation Science of Life Studies 24/7, he is in the midst of setting up 100 community learning centres in various parts of the country to offer free education and soft skills training (in the English language) to underprivileged youth.

What did University of South Wales get out of the deal?

Any new bursaries or other funding in the pipeline?
