Cardiff City transfer news: Cardozo back on radar

Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:49 pm

Cardiff City have been given a boost in their pursuit of Benfica's Oscar Cardozo, after Turkish side Fenerbahce pulled out of the race to sign the striker.

Fenerbahce were believed to be close to completing a deal for Cardozo, with reports on Monday suggesting personal terms had been agreed.

That move now appears to have collapsed however, after negotiations over a transfer fee broke down.
Speaking to reporters in Turkey, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim said: “We wanted to sign him and he wanted to join.
“But his club wanted £13 million and wouldn't go a penny lower.
“With this in mind we have had to end our interest in Cardozo."
The Paraguay international forward is also understood to have been a target for Cardiff.
Manager Malky Mackay has previously spoken of his admiration for the player and the Premier League side could now look to re-ignite their interest in the striker.
However, reports in Turkey are suggesting Yildirim's comments have been designed to put pressure on Benfica directors to lower their asking price and that the Istanbul club plan to continue negotiations this week.
Cardozo has made 255 appearances for Benfica, scoring 154 times since his arrival from Argentinian side Newell's Old Boys in 2007.

If we weren't willing to pay that much for Wanyama - whose price would only increase in the future should he perform well - I can't see the club splurging £13m on a 30 year-old striker.

Would love to be watching Cardozo at the CCS week in, week out though. :D

I'm inclined to agree with you.I wonder how many 30yro's have commanded that sort of fee anyway.

Rather silly thread. Didn't MM just come out & say he would not be buying any more strikers?

If it means Cardozo scores enough goals, to keep us in the premier league £10-13m is f**k all! Depends how much of a risk it is? He'll be good for a decent 3yr service I reckon! That's 3-4m per year. ? Food for thought!
