Looks like he is going to Palace. Not a bad signing for them if it comes off.

Hull aren't being shy either :?

I'd happily have spent the A-Corn money on Carlton Cole, proven premiership player & one time England international. Be a good signing for them.

Haven't you heard that its tough for newly promoted sides to sign anyone

Well I reckon Bellamy, Campbell and Maynard are better than cole. And if you want to compare the target man thing, paying £8m for cornelius should hopefully prove he's better as well!

Ian Holloway is about to become a happy man.

The Crystal Palace manager, who last week lamented the rigors of the transfer market, is close to signing former West Ham striker Carlton Cole to a one year contract.

Cole will head to Palace on a free transfer after his contract with the Hammers ran out earlier this summer. The 29 year old is set to undergo a medical at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.

Cole could be the answer to the prayers of Palace manager Ian Holloway, who recently rued, “I am finding out how even more difficult it is compared to last time because of the zillions of extra quid that everybody’s got. Everybody’s asking for all sorts of things and it is almost ridiculous to get a deal done.”

Getting the deal done for Cole should relieve some of Holloway’s tension, as the striker adds Premier League experience and a nose for goal, having scored 47 goals in 227 appearances for the Hammers. Cole had been linked with a number of English sides, including West Brom and Hull City, as well as Turkish side Besiktas.

Cole’s biggest competition for the starting role at Palace will be with Glenn Murray. The Englishman wrote himself into club history last season becoming only the 7th player to score 30 goals in a season. Murray’s season ended in devastation, however, when he ruptured his cruciate knee ligament in the play-off semi-final first leg against Brighton.

Murray’s injury provides Cole with the opportunity to make an immediate impact at the South London club, but he’ll also face competition from the ageless Kevin Phillips, who Holloway signed to a one year deal last week, as well as Stephen Dobbie and Aaron Wilbraham.

What a shit goal return

Bellamy isnt even in the same category of player, much more a wide man & creator now.
Campbell is a poacher, as we've seen. Maynard on the other hand couldn't get into the WHU team over Cole, but again they're different players.
Point is we've signed and unknown target man that could turn out great, but just as easy be a massive waste of cash. Where as Carlton Cole would have been a safe option. Time will tell, but I think he'd be a good catch for Palace.

& mate, I'm yet to see someone worse than Bobby Zamora infront of goal.

How anyone can say Carlton Cole would have been a good signing for us is beyond me! I would honestly rather Rudy, and I'm not joking!

Doesn't say much about our current defence, if that is the case. He ripped them apart for West Ham in the Play-Offs. :?

Good he's sh!t

He's one of these names who was much touted when he was younger but has never really
proven himself to be more than an average Premiership striker. A goal average of 1 in 5
and that includes a season in the Championship.

A poor mans Emile Heskey is all he is

I'd take him as back up. I think he'd be about as good in the prem as Rudy was in the champ (ie not fantastic, but will be decent when we need a big man to throw on and would chip in with the odd important performance).

Wouldn't say I'm gutted though.

We have better strikers in Nicky Maynard and Fraizer Campbell, I think Cornelius will also prove to be better :ayatollah:

Former West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has reportedly opened talks over a move to Saint-Etienne.

The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by the Hammers at the end of last season.

The ex-England international could now be nearing a switch to Ligue 1, according to Sky Sports News.

Crystal Palace are also thought to be interested in a move for Cole.
