A forum for all things Cardiff City
Sun Jul 21, 2013 9:58 am
Malky Mackay has once again urged patience when it comes to signings, insisting Premier League Cardiff City remains an attractive destination for players.
With less than a month to the big kick-off, Mackay has so far brought in just the one signing, the club record £8.5m capture of striker Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen.
There has, though, been frustration for the Bluebirds boss in the market place so far this summer.
After agreeing a fee and personal terms with Blackpool flyer Tom Ince, Mackay saw the 21-year-old turn his back on a move to the Welsh capital at the 11th hour.
A £10m bid for Celtic’s Victor Wanyama came to nothing after Cardiff owner Vincent Tan called a halt on an increased bid and the big midfielder headed to Southampton instead.
But as he prepares his troops for their opening clash with West Ham on August 17, Mackay is unconcerned with what might have happened so far in the transfer window.
The no-nonsense Scot remains fully focused on looking forward and disagrees with suggestions that time is moving on apace without enough fresh faces arriving at the club.
“It’s not any different from last August or last January as far as I’m concerned,” said Mackay.
“People want everyone signed immediately, but we all know within football that does not automatically happen.
“It takes time to bring in players. You invariably find you are in competition for them.
“Sometimes prices just become too high for a player you might be interested in.”
With promotion to the top-flight has naturally come greater interest in who the Bluebirds might actually be looking to bring into the club.
The mainstream media and the internet are abuzz with names who Mackay is allegedly interested in pursuing.
The Bluebirds boss said he can understand the curiosity, but insists it will have no effect on the way he goes about his business.
“I know there are plenty of people out there who for whatever reasons want to throw in the names of players who have nothing at all to do with this football club,” said Mackay.
“I understand why people want to talk about players and discuss them.
“I know people want ten players signed yesterday. I get all the excitement of that, but I’m the person actually charged with making the best decisions for this football club.
“I’ve done that for two years. I’ve recruited over 30 players and the way I’m doing it is not going to change now. We will bring good players into this club and sometimes that takes time. It’s up to me to manage all that.”
In his first two seasons with the Bluebirds Mackay has indeed managed the procuring of talent in a highly successful fashion.
In his first term in charge in the Welsh capital, despite having to basically build an almost totally new squad, Mackay led the Bluebirds to the Championship play-offs and the League Cup final.
And last season, of course, he developed the Cardiff side which romped to the Championship title and took the club to the top-flight for the first time in more than half-a-century.
The stakes now are even higher for Mackay with Premier League survival a near necessity if the club is to move forward both on and off the pitch.
Mackay himself balks at suggestions that he is finding it tough to bring in the right faces in the pressure cooker of the Premier League.
“It’s no different now,” insisted Mackay.
“My task in the first year here was to bring in free transfers because we didn’t have that much money to spend relatively speaking.
“They had to be on frees and better than the players I felt than were already here.
“Last summer my challenge was to bring in players who could challenge for promotion in the Championship.
“Now this year my challenge is to bring in some players who are going to help us at the next level up again. It’s not really any different in terms of the tasks, it’s just that the stakes have been raised just a little bit higher. That’s how it is.”
One thing Mackay, pictured, is certainly not concerned about is just how attractive a destination Cardiff City is right now.
With the Premier League lying ahead and billionaire-backer Vincent Tan keen to push through team strengthening and initiatives off the pitch, the manager believes plenty of players would love the chance to join the Bluebirds’ bandwagon. “This is a great place for someone to come in terms of the way we are going,” added Mackay.
“Players who come here will get the chance to show what they can do at the very highest level.
“It’s a fantastic place right now in terms of its potential.
“We’ve got a devoted passionate fan base and Cardiff itself is just a fantastic city to live in.
“We are a young hungry team with talented players and an owner who is prepared to invest.
“There’s a stability here right now which I think is attractive to players.”

Maybe if he put at ease and gave us an indication on how close some deals are we wouldn't be worried. 27 days until the season starts.

Tell me my dear CityGent ....have you answered that direct question that was put to yourself several days ago,if you have forgotten the question, maybe i can be of some help to you......i think the question was"how many players Mackay needs to sign, and of what quality",if you have answered this question, and i have failed to notice,i apologise of course i do,but on the other hand if you haven't answered a basic football question,i would be mystified by your reticence

You're asking me a question on if i think we should strengthen and what areas? My sincere apologies for missing such a riveting and pertinent question. It doesn't take a genius to work out we're in the market for a defensive midfielder (there is another bid imminent) and that is also the case for a left winger( news to follow shortly on that), but instead of spending half of my life focussing on negativity like yourself,
I'm actually looking forward to Malky and Cardiff City FC proving you wrong for the umpteenth time. David Marshall, Ben Turner, Andrew Taylor, Mark Hudson, Whittingham, Kimbo, Jordan Mutch, Gunnars, Bellamy, possibly Craig Noone, Nicky Maynard, Frazier Campbell and the fine acquisition of the seriously hot football property in Andreas Cornelius(Malky pulled off one of the coups of the summer there) then we already have a quality spine to compete with at least half of the premier league. Within a month, the new additions of continental class, experience and sought after hungry talent then I promise you, the forum pessimist who isn't embarrassed about the amount of times you've called it wrong and like many posters of your ilk, are only educated in the art of hindsight, then your posts to this forum will become more infrequent

This beaut is up there with the most embarrassing posters on the forum. If Malky won the champions league with us our dear numpty would still pipe up that Clough did it twice.
He calls me a bully, which is f*cking rich as all he ever does is try to patronise with his fake intellectual gibberish. It's just the arse wipe doesn't enjoy being taken to the cyber cleaners, which he realises i easily manage to do every time he opens his tripe hole

city gent don't bite to him, I honestly cant understand why he supports Cardiff and you are right I honestly think if Malky wins the premier league he still wont be happy

My dear citygent...with such a great intellect that you obviously have,im assuming you know the meaning of the word"Nemesis"....you really must be careful in not turning me into your Nemesis,i think you would be wise old fruit,to listen to a fellow poster, who said, and i quote "don't rise to him"...good advise my old mucker,i would take it, if only for the sake of your blood pressure....by the way i admire your courage, some would say stupidity, but not me.you are clearly predicting 2 signings, even naming the positions of both players, to happen in the very near future....watch your back carl

Nemesis? Please don't flatter yourself that when I go about my day to day busy lifestyle that something as insignificant as this forum and anonymous illiterates who I wouldn't be arsed to hold a conversation with in real time would be at the forefront of my thoughts. Personally though, I'd class a nemesis as someone who could engage in a high level of debate and in your definition of the word, someone who can't be beaten or overcome. I suppose you're delusional enough to believe the latter, but seeing as you've already been shown up in your one-eyed, blinkered and laughable critique of our greatest manager for almost half a century, please explain to me very slowly why the f**k are you replying to me after you've repeatedly been made to look a c**t?

I'm sure Malky is fully aware that his head will be on block if we if we get off to a poor start. The pressure will come within so we need to trust his judgement.

And they should be. Even the best team in the land have not signed a player yet. Chill out.

While your casting your net, best of luck, perhaps you can catch the large aggressive eel you
spoke of in an earlier post:
