' Vincent Tan on Transfers '

Thu Jul 18, 2013 5:29 pm

18th July 2013

VINCENT Tan speaks about CCFC transfers.

We agreed to sign Tom Ince and then he changed his mind or whatever. We actually agreed to buy (Victor) Wanyama, but Celtic raised what they wanted.

“We were at £10m but they wanted more and I said, ‘No’ so somebody paid more.

“We are looking at several others. We have a good, current squad. If not how did we win the Championship? How do you think we were the champions? The squad is good and still there we just need a few additions to make us stronger but it’s not easy.

“We are dealing and competing with clubs who are far richer than us.

“There are 20 Premier League clubs and I could say I am the poorest owner of the 20.

“I cannot compete with Abu Dhabi (Manchester City), Roman Abramovich (Chelsea) and many others.

“We will try to be moderate and hopefully with our manager and squad we get lucky.

“We are willing to look at some more (money).

“We will see. I always say we don’t try to worry too much about crossing the river until we get to the riverbank. Until we get there, we don’t worry about the cost. If we need, if we need, sure we can consider.

“Nothing is set in stone. I always say never say never.”

and he basically says the £25m isn't a fixed amount! more money is there if we need it!

I have a pessimistic feeling that, that could be a scapegoat for not bringing in enough players.

you can look at it both ways! could just be a way of telling clubs dont expect cardiff to be paying obsurd prices for players!

Maybe HMRC are watching him?

Re: Tan on Transfers

or HMRC AR owing him?? paid a lot of the tax from Hammam and Ridsdale. :old: He is a shrewd old cookie. Billionaires usually are :D

I agree with him on our current squad! We absolutely strolled the championship, and took our foot off the gas toward the end of the season, and unlike a lot of people saying we strolled it because the league standard was poor last season, I lean more towards the idea that we won it so easy because our squad and manager were head and shoulders above the rest in an otherwise very competitive league. Me personally think we already have a squad good enough to survive.. I don't think the gap between the bottom end of the premier league and the top end of the championship is that big. I'm probably wrong but that's what I believe.

Re: Tan on Transfers

’Ive been thinking about long-term in this business and probably the biggest expenditure are the players.

“Celtic bought Wanyama for £900,000 in 2011 and now they ask for £10m - and then when other parties get interested then it’s £12m or £12.5m. So what do you think? Isn’t developing players an important part of the business?

“Of course, we do have an academy where you are limited. So I’m thinking, where else can we look for players? my thinking is along these lines.

“We have a co-operation agreement with FK Sarajevo FC to work together as a kind of affiliated club and we have studied whether we can own a stake in the club but there is nothing firm.

“Croatia (HNK Dubrovnik) is another option. There’s nothing firm and not much discussion.

“Hopefully this will keep Cardiff in good shape for a long, long time to come and not paying too much and top, top dollar all the time to get good players. It is good for the future.

why is it certain? keeping the core of our squad and then adding 4-5 quality additions to improve it? seems very good tbh! we dont want to go down the QPR route of replacing everyone! we got a good goalkeeper, 2/3 good defenders, very young and talented midfielders, and then strikers who haven't been given much of a chance in the prem! we just need more quality and experience in the squad! it's all about quality not quantity... Leon Britton was playing League 1 football and he has done well for you in the prem, why can't ours do well?

If you get the additions you need you will do ok, you will not stay up with your current squad

no one expects us to stick with the current squad, we just expect a few quality additions that'll improve what we have or haven't got, not 9-10 new players to replace what we got

I should have put down "with 3-4 good experienced signings added" but to the people who are saying we need a whole new team, at least 9 new signings etc, are in my opinion, underestimating the squad we already have. You don't win a championship the way we did, without having an already capable squad, that just needs maybe a bit more experience and tweaking. The squad we already have is not that far away from holding there own in the premier league in my opinion.

I hope he does have a lot more money than I think because investing in 2 clubs abroad could come back to bite us.

Will someone please explain to our owner and those who think like him.............there is a world of difference between the Championship and the Premiership..........the current team who won the Championship will,if not strengthened considerably, will go straight back down......

The thing is Malky does have money to spend, there is no set budget. Malky had money left over from January, everyone URGED him to spend and he didn't, Malky needs to urgently spend now! :ayatollah:

i don't blame Tan for not paying more, they would have taken 10m if no one else was looking, 10m for someone who's been playing in a mickey mouse league is pretty dam good if you ask me
