Marseille now in the running for Gomis.

Marseille to challenge Premier League teams for Lyon striker.

Marseille are ready to rival Premier League clubs in the hunt for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Newcastle, mindful of losing Papiss Cisse due to the Wonga row, are looking at strikers.

Cardiff and Hull City are also said to be interested in Gomis, who is almost certain to leave Lyon this summer.

Remi Garde does not believe the striker is his first choice and will listen to offers, which has sparked enquiries.

However, clubs in England better move quickly as Marseille are now in the running.

Gomis has scored 50 in 145 Ligue 1 appearances since joing Lyon from Saint-Etienne.

And Marseille believe the lure of staying in France will appeal to the 27-year-old, who has already rejected an offer from Fenerbahce.

Newcastle and Villa - Also link with Gomis =

With mystery surrounding the future of Papiss Cisse, Newcastle United are in danger of heading towards the new season with possibly the only frontline striker being Gouffran.

GEN00130_BT_Bafetimbi_Gomis_Newcastle_United_NUFCWith the ‘pursuit’ of Premier League strikers such as Remy and Bent being doubtful to say the least, unless they are willing to take much lower wages, it would always be the sporting bet to guess a striker from the continent is most likely.

Earlier tonight we mentioned that Marseille striker Gignac was being touted again (read more here).

However, the Shields Gazette are now suggesting that Newcastle could bring in two or three strikers, especially if Cisse ends up leaving.

They report that Lyon owner, Jean-Michel Aulas, has confirmed via Twitter that Newcastle and Villa are in talks with Gomis.

On being asked if Villa and United were in talks regarding Gomis, he answered, “Yes, it is not incorrect.”

As we’ve previously reported, Lyon are looking to sell a number of star players including Gomis to relieve financial pressures. Plus the French striker only has one year left on his contract.

Gomis looks like a signing that would be a step forward for Newcastle but if it did end up as a fight between ourselves & Villa and Newcastle lost…
