Hudson to remain as City skipper

Wed Jul 17, 2013 1:54 pm

Mark Hudson has been given the go-ahead to lead Cardiff City into their first Premier League campaign.

Manager Malky Mackay has no doubts about the man he wants to lead City into the new season, saying: “Mark Hudson is my club captain, simple as that.

“It’s a situation which certainly won’t change.”

Hudson, 31, has made more than 150 first team appearances for the Bluebirds and played a leading role in their promotion success.

Mackay rewarded Hudson with a new contract and the manager says: “He earned that for the way he has been and how professional he has been since I have been at club.

“He came to Cardiff four years ago and at the time it was a big price tag, but I have been impressed with the ability and consistency of the man on and off the pitch.

“Mark is a dream to work with because of approach he has and how open-minded he is about trying new things with my coaching staff and medical team.

“He has bought into everything we want to do here.

“Then, of course, it’s about consistency on pitch and there is no question about that.

“Think back to the League Cup final against Liverpool.

“He was injured for three weeks leading up to that match against Liverpool.

“I knew I wanted to give him best chance and he was outstanding until he was forced off with cramp after playing 120 minutes.

“That’s a soldier I want in my trench.

“Mark is still at a point where he is really disappointed about the ankle injury he sustained at Blackpool which kept him out at the end of last season.

“But he had an operation on that and is back, came through rehab over the summer working with physios and is in full training and flying.

“He is a player to be proud of in terms of body fat and how he has kept his body.

“That’s somebody who has sacrificed things and dedicated himself to being a top class footballer.

“You need people like that at a club.

“There has been people at Cardiff City in the past who have not been like that, which is fine, but then you don’t play here.”

Hudson will be battling it out with Ben Turner, Matt Connolly and potential new signings, who will surely be coming in over the next month, and Mackay admits he cannot guarantee anybody a starting place.

“Week to week, of course, it’s about players on the pitch and nobody can say they will definitely play every game,” says Mackay.

“In my first season with cardiff there were probably six or seven who would start.

“Then, in 2012-13, it was getting less and less able to happen because of the quality we have here.

“Now we are going to bring in players again to raise the standards.

“Not many will be able to guarantee starting spots in the coming season and that can only be good for our club.”

Cracking. Pleased with Huds as Captain.

I felt Jones undermined him by appointing Bellers as captain as soon as he arrived.

Something like 1.75 million we payed for him?

Worth every penny.

He wasn't not the biggest fans favourite when he first came here but he has come up loads and became our key player.

Deserved of player of the year and last season he showed his true ability. Captain who gets respect from every player.

Malky was a CB hiself so knows what he needs to do.

Great captain, led by example last year.

Captian Fantastic.

Hudson deserves it. His leadership skills have been immense over the past few seasons.
If it wasn't Hudson then for me I'd pick Gunnarsson.

Rule out Whittingham. He doesn't speak on the pitch and is just as commanding as a mute person without any limbs. He just wriggles.

Bellamy is a great leader too and same goes for Marshall.

No doubts about it. He should definitely be captain. He's a very good role model to other players and didn't get the club player of the season award for nothing.

Don't even see why he was asked about it, why replace our Championship winning team/club captain when he's obviously successful, only Bellamy/Taylor could step in and do a job like him

Agree with the above. No idea why this is even newsworthy!

It's a Cardiff City story in the press, most of us want to read news stories whether they are ground-breaking or otherwise.
Particularly now as it's pre season.

Keep them coming I say! :malky: :ayatollah:

But I'd have thought that it was pretty blatant that Hudson would still be captain at the beginning of the coming season, like everyone else. So what is the point of the piece? :?

It goes without saying, a real leader.

It just goes to show that no player should ever be written off.
It wasn't to long ago that message boards were covered in how he was a league 2 player at best and how we have better park players
