Vincent Tan in talks to buy TWO European clubs

Wed Jul 17, 2013 8:53 am

Not new news but an interesting read. Interesting that he found Dubrovnik an attraction as they have "tradition but currently has no potential". Wonder if another re-brand is on the cards?

Malaysian millionaire sets sights on FK Sarajevo and HNK Dubrovnik - and club insists links will help develop youth players for Bluebirds.

Cardiff City backer Vincent Tan is in talks to buy two overseas clubs – and has already agreed a player link-up with one.

The Malaysian millionaire was in Bosnia this week to announce a co-operation agreement with FK Sarajevo and the Bluebirds which will see “mutual player exchange” arrangements.

Cardiff are keen to point out the scheme was designed more for youth players than seeing senior imports or first-team squad members heading to Europe for experience.

But reports on the continent have also suggested Tan is ready to make a financial investment in the Europa League Bosnian side, with one official admitting the Cardiff majority shareholder has expressed an interest to buy the club.

Furthermore, it has been claimed Tan is also in talks to take over Croatian club HNK Dubrovnik.

The mayor of Dubrovnik and a Croatian business associate of Tan have both stated talks have begun for the Malaysian entrepreneur to buy the lower-level side with the aim of pushing them into the top flight – and possibly creaming the best of young Balkan talent.

There is nothing in Uefa rules to stop owners having a stakeholding in more than one club – providing they do not meet in Uefa competition.

It is not clear whether Tan is serious about the purported investment interest, although the initial link-up with FK Sarajevo is official, having been announced at a press conference in Bosnia on Sunday.

Cardiff are yet to announce the partnership themselves, but Tan, acting chairman and chief executive Simon Lim and director Michael Isaac were all present to sign what was described as a memorandum of understanding.

Ahead of their second qualifying round game in the Europa League tomorrow, FK Sarajevo officials described the agreement as “a very special day”, while CEO Dino Selimovic revealed it would, in effect, create a feeder club for Cardiff.

He added: “(The deal will see Cardiff) assist setting up and running of the new modern youth academy at FK Sarajevo, as well as mutual player exchange and loaning of players, providing technical assistance and mutual exchange of experiences of all staff.”

Selimovic added that it would also see friendlies arranged between the clubs, the memorandum preceding a future contract to be signed next month.

Tan said: “This is a very important venture to invest in, to put something together to help Bosnia and FK Sarajevo.

“I am very pleased with this visit to sign a co-operation agreement, hopefully with this we will be able to work in a few areas to assist FK Sarajevo and help them to be able to develop football talent, especially in the academy.

“We can work together to produce better footballers for both FK Sarajevo and maybe Cardiff City and maybe even to play for other clubs.

“We hope this will be well received by everybody and enhance good relations between Malaysia and Bosnia.”

Feeder clubs are not a modern phenomenon, Manchester United’s link-up with Belgium’s Royal Antwerp perhaps the most well-cited example, with Cardiff’s own striker Fraizer Campbell enjoying a season spell there to gain senior experience.

But the concept of owning said clubs has only recently come into the spotlight, with Watford’s owner Gino Pozzo also having controlling stakes in Serie A side Udinese and Spanish outfit Granada.

Watford benefited in the Championship last year by loaning a string of Udinese players – including Championship top scorer Matej Vydra – and it was reported that again player development was behind claimed interest in HNK Dubrovnik.

Tan flew by private jet from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik as part of a proposed business deal regarding a one billion Euro holiday resort nicknamed the Pearl of Dubrovnik.

And his associate on that project, Vicenca Blagaic, claimed that he had been impressed by Croatian football talent and was keen to capitalise upon that for Cardiff at youth level.

It was also claimed Tan had assessed a potential investment in iconic Croatian side Hajduk Split, but opted against it because of the risk involved.

And he insisted that things have gone so far with regards to ‘County League’ side Dubrovnik to even discuss new stadium plans.

“We were looking for a club with which we start from scratch, ground up,” Blagaic said of Tan’s interest. “Likewise, we wanted a club that has a tradition. Originally we thought about Hajduk, but then we realised that it would be too risky.

“Then we decided it would be best to be Dubrovnik, which has a tradition, but currently does not have potential.

“Immediately we got in touch with the mayor, he was delighted and said that there is no problem.”

“To start with there will be a large investment, we will go slowly, deliberately. Officials took to the players if the opportunity arose. First step is to purchase the club, and then we’re going to build a new stadium in Lapad for which there are already some preliminary designs and plans.”

Other media outlets have since reported a confirmation from Dubrovnik’s mayor, Andro Vlahušic, regarding discussions of a possible takeover.

Is this potentially massive news?

We seem to be the the 'bigger' club in all these tie-ups and the beneficiary of any talent. There seems to be a structure being put in place that, at the moment, has us at the top of it.

Makes plenty of sense..
Vinnie is very astute businessman, but unfortunately for you he sees CCFC as just that a business and you are merely its customers.

And successful businesses are built on among other things franchise, rebranding, and obtaining a profitable supply chain.

Since he has already done the rebranding part, he is now looking into franchise and supply chain....

That's what you had better worry about... ;)

Does this mean that young talent form around the world who havent played international football could play for these sides for a year to obtain a working visa?

Could this also be another reason?

You have to realise football is a business. You Jacks bang on all the time about how other clubs should follow your BUSINESS MODEL and how much profit you make

VT is trying to do that but on a much bigger scale

I love the way you pick a few random factors that you reckon successful businesses are built on just so they fit into your post. And of course a profitable supply chain means VT is going to send poor players to us and compromise our chances of staying on the PL, as that makes really good business sense doesn't it

Didn't you admit you that were really stupid in another thread? QED. :laughing6:
