Cardiff must learn from Hull and Palace

Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:10 pm

Daniel Lewis believes Cardiff should follow the approach taken by fellow Premier League new boys Hull City and Crystal Palace in the transfer market.

The biggest advantage of automatic promotion to the Premier League, we are often told, is that managers have a time advantage on other sides in terms of going after potential transfer targets.

A full 90 days have now passed since Cardiff City’s historic 0-0 draw against Charlton, which meant long-suffering supporters could finally look forward to a season in the top tier once again. Despite this, just one new player – Andreas Cornelius – has been brought in to strengthen the side, with some fans beginning to become a little restless at the lack of transfer activity.

In an ideal world, as Cardiff get to work during their gruelling week-long training camp in Switzerland, Malky Mackay would have all of his new recruits in place ready for the new campaign – though that isn’t the case. After missing out on two high-profile transfer targets in the past seven days, Mackay now faces a battle to bring in new players to add to his relatively inexperienced Premier League side.

Meanwhile, fellow promoted clubs Hull City and Crystal Palace continue to strengthen – opting for a string of low key signings, as opposed to breaking the bank in the same way as Malaysian-backed Cardiff.

Following promotion to the Premier League, Hull boss Steve Bruce has used his managerial links to bring in a string of players, including Curtis Davies, Allan McGregor and Maynor Figueroa, as well as turning the loan contracts of Ahmed Elmohamady and George Boyd into permanent deals.

At a cost of £6million, Bruce – much like Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace – has taken small steps to strengthen his side throughout – something which can’t be said of the Bluebirds. Bringing in Cornelius from Copenhagen from a club record fee of £8.5million left fans excited, with a mix of players ranging from Javier Saviola to Dirk Kuyt being linked with a move to south Wales, but no other signings have yet to follow the Dane.

In Mackay’s two years at the club, one of many noticeable aspects which contrasts to the previous regime under Dave Jones is the way the Scot goes about his transfer dealings under the radar – something which continued into this summer with the capture of Cornelius to the surprise of many.

Cardiff are 1/2 to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season, while Hull City are 11/10 and Crystal Palace 7/5.

The recent Tom Ince transfer saga, combined with missing out on Victor Wanyama to Southampton, has left Mackay in a perilous situation that he is not used to, whereby fellow clubs know the Bluebirds have the money to spend, which could cause problems when it comes to negotiating a fee.

Despite this, Mackay could do worse than draw inspiration from one of his own former clubs, Norwich City. Upon the Canaries promotion in 2011, then-boss Paul Lambert opted for a batch of inexperienced, but hungry players – a combination that Mackay himself has favoured in the past.

A total of 15 new players were brought in during their first season back in the Premier League, 13 of which were playing in the Football League at the time, with Leeds’ Bradley Johnson and Johnny Howson highlighting how Lambert went after players who would be willing to fight hard to gain a place in his side. Though Ince rejected a move to Cardiff on personal grounds, delving back into the Championship for talent is not necessarily a bad thing, as many promoted sides in previous years have shown.

A combined fee of around £18million was set to be offered to Blackpool and Celtic respectively for the acquisitions of Ince and Wanyama, but Mackay and his backroom staff will now have to turn attention elsewhere.

With a month remaining until the start of the season, Mackay will not be panicking just yet – though it may be a case of Cardiff needing to learn to walk in the Premier League before running.

Apart from figeroua none would get in our team tho. What's the point of signing players that are no better than what we have?

Malky seems to have got it smack on in the past - and many arriving late. In Malky we trust. As for Hull and Palace, who gives a shit. They've bought players we would have been looking at to get promotion out of the Championship. Their signings are not Prem class. I think Malky will surprise us very soon - HOPE!. Still need a winger, big holding midfeilder back four and prob another keeper!?

Malky has already stated he will not get players in just to make up the numbers. The only players he wants to bring in are players that are better than what we have. I know it getting close but there is time left and transfers will start to come in. players like Ince wont be so confident to reject us when there's only a week left of the transfer market to go

Figueroa was a miss. Considering its an area we need to strengthen.

The others, not to sure about.

The player I would love to see in a City shirt is Lee Catermole. Not saying we have a hope, I just rate him. Cheaper than Wanayama.

Those 2 teams have gone for the bargain bin whereas we are waiting for the sales to arrive. Much better pickings still to come.

But the sales tend to be a busy time of the year and the shops are packed with like minded bargain hunters. I would rather our approach and buy quality from specialist boutiques and up and coming items from those trendy foreign markets. Buy early sit back feet up job done.

Don't forget we've got a billionaire owner who'll do whatevers needed financially to keep us in the premier league.
You can't put a price on the publicity Cardiff City in the premier gives VT and the doors that'll open for him in the business world. :ayatollah:

Need to bring in quality otherwise we will be straight back down. We have some prem quality players such as Kimbo for example but we need to add quality. No point buying players that wont improve the team.

Hull currently have a better team than is, ans I hate the wankers, but its true :( midfield is probably our only strong area at premier league level atm
