Friendly at Jenner Park, Barry

Tue Jul 16, 2013 11:06 am

Press release received today....

"Premiership new boys Cardiff City are coming to Jenner Park next Saturday (27th July); with the Bluebirds set to tackle Gavin Chesterfield’s Barry Town United in a hotly-anticipated pre-season friendly.

The special match will form the centrepiece of Barry Town United’s Family Fun Day - a community event in association with LDS Motor Factors and RIM Motors that will feature live music, a bouncy castle, barbecue, disco and more, in addition to the football.

Tickets for the whole day, including admission to the match and the other entertainment, are available online now at barry.ticketsource.co.uk - for the family-friendly prices of £5 and £3 (U11s).

Bluebirds fans are encouraged to make a day of it and enjoy a summer’s morning in the sunshine at Barry Island, The Knap or Porthkerry, ahead of the 3pm kick-off.

Last season, Cardiff City brought a team to Jenner Park for a sell-out match that included a string of full internationals and first team faces.

Another strong side is expected to make the short, 6-mile journey from the Cardiff City Stadium next Saturday – and ticket sales are expected to be similarly swift!

The coming season sees Cardiff return to top flight football for the first time in over 50 years, as runaway winners of the Championship.

In their last stint, which lasted two seasons, the Bluebirds’ top goalscorers were Derek Tapscott and Dai Ward - both Barry boys by birth, highlighting the long-standing ties between the town and Cardiff City.

With Jenner Park approaching its 100th birthday in September, it is very fitting that Cardiff will continue their long tradition of visits, which stretches back as far as 1915.

All Cardiff fans from Barry and beyond, including those unable to secure season tickets for the Bluebirds’ Premiership campaign, are warmly welcomed to come and see some of the club’s future Premiership stars in person on their doorstep.

Barry Town United manager Gavin Chesterfield commented: “We are extremely proud of the close links we share with Cardiff City Football Club and look forward immensely to hosting them on Saturday 27th July”.

“It will be a real reward for our players to be able to test themselves against players of the highest quality”.

“We look forward to making the day a memorable occasion for the whole community to enjoy”.

Barry Town United played their first friendly of the season on Saturday, running out 1-0 winners against Moreton Rangers in the Cotswolds, thanks to second-half strike from Lewis Grant.

Grant commented: “The Cardiff City game is going to be a great day - not only for the players, who get to play against a Premiership club in front of a big crowd, but also for the community of Barry”.

“We hope that Cardiff supporters and neutrals too will turn out to support our cause - and hopefully we can thank them by putting on a good show”.

The Cardiff match will be only the second ever visit of a Premiership club to the town of Barry - and the first since 1996, when Manchester United made the trip for Matthew Holtham’s Memorial Match.

A special match programme will be published on the day, with anyone wishing to advertise in it encouraged to e-mail barrytownunited@live.co.uk with their requirements by 5pm on Monday."
