He played in 35 games for Sunderland in the Premier League last season. According to local press in Sunderland, he has refused to sign a new contract because he wants to play in his prefered position of central midfield and not at left-back where he played most of last season.
The fact he can play in both these positions however would make him an attractive proposition as far as Malky is concerned.

He was one of their better players in a team that lacked goals which is not his job

So- he is a JACK of all trades and master of none ?

I think Colback will improve the quality of the squad by providing cover and competition for Gunnarson in midfield and Taylor at left-back. For a 23 year old he also has significant experience at Premier League level and the fact that Di Canio is furious he won't sign a new contract must say something about his quality.
Unfortunately in our first season in the Premier League MM has got to be realistic in the players he wants to sign.

top flight experience one of the better players for sunderland last season he is very versatile he would be a great addition we need players who will graft and work to keep us in the league don't need massive big names just good solid players

DiCanio wants him to sign a new contract, though Colback is refusing to based on the fact he's earning little in comparison to the majority of other players at Sunderland.
He's a versatile midfielder who can sit back and push forward, or even step in at left back should Taylor be unavailable. I'd welcome the signing, but fully expect it to just be paper talk.

I'd take him and Lee Cattermole.

Absolutely correct.
A feisty b*stard like Cattermole would be perfect!

Would be an ideal signing, Good competition for Taylor.
