Record Cardiff City signing Andreas Cornelius relishing derby battle with Danish legend Michael Laudrup
Record Cardiff City signing Andreas Cornelius admits he can’t wait to go up against “the best player” his country has ever produced.
That opponent – Michael Laudrup – won’t actually be on the pitch with Cornelius, but it is a mark of the Swansea City manager’s standing in Denmark that being involved in the same game still represents a huge thrill for the £8.5m striker.
The first-top flight South Wales derby meeting in the fixture’s 101-year history will take place at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday, November 3.
That live television date, with a 4pm kick-off, was confirmed by the release of Sky’s fixtures this week, with the reverse fixture taking place at the Liberty Stadium in February.
And Cornelius, who left FC Copenhagen in his native Denmark to sign a five-year deal at Cardiff, has admitted he can’t contain his excitement at the thought of coming up against Danish legend Laudrup.
The Swansea boss is rightly regarded as his nation’s greatest ever footballing export with a playing career that saw spells at Italian outfits Lazio and Juventus and time at both Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Laudrup might have celebrated his 49th birthday last month and his playing career stopped 15 years ago, but Cornelius said everybody back home remains aware of the rich talent who won 104 caps and scored 37 goals for Denmark.
Cornelius also knows the rich history of Danes who have graced the Premier League down the years.
The likes of Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby, ironically a former Swansea City manager, and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel both prospered in England, as have other lesser-known players like Thomas Gravesen and Daniel Agger. Everybody knows about Michael Laudrup. He is the best player ever from Denmark,” said Cornelius.

A rumour that was very much grounded in truth. Sadly, £8m man Tom Ince said NO
Celtic star Victor Wanyama was wanted but the Bluebirds refused to increase their £10m offer, leaving the door open for Southampton
Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis was of interest but would he want to come given interest from a number of other clubs? And would Cardiff be prepared to spend £12m on another striker after smashing their transfer record for Cornelius? No, is probably the answer to both
A lot of reports suggested Benfica star Oscar Cardozo could be on his way following reported comments from Malky Mackay in a Portugese newspaper. The club later denied interest and it always seemed a slightly odd one
Reports linked Peter Odemwingie to Cardiff City and Swansea City. The fact neither were really interested meant the story didn't quite stand up
The old 'new Maradona' Javier Saviola is reportedly a target for Cardif f City, West Ham and Arsenal. Another one that seems highly unlikely
No-nonsense Sunderland star Lee Cattermole was allegedly among Cardiff's top targets last month. Not going to happen, our sources suggest.
He's young, he's Welsh and he's half decent, so Cardiff must be interested, right? £5m-rated Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams was touted but the Bluebirds have no interest this summer.
Another Wales star who the Bluebirds have been linked with is Hal Robson-Kanu. Those links ended this week when the Reading man signed a new three-year deal at the Championship side.
West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans was told he could look for a new club so, naturally, Cardiff were thrown into the mix as potential suitors. You never know, but no confirmed interest whatsoever at this point.
Former Chelsea star Salomon Kalou was one of the first to be linked with Cardiff City but this was quickly dismissed as nonsense.
A £2m move for for Fenerbahce defender Joseph Yobo was touted in June. Another that was dismissed by sources at Cardiff.
At one stage, internet rumours suggested former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt had already enrolled his children at a school in the city. The verdict from Cardiff? More nonsense
A recent one here...Kurt Zouma is an 18-year-old defender at Saint-Etienne who Cardiff have apparently lodged a 10 million Euro bid for. No official interest, though
Forest striker Lewis McGugan was another early target. The fact he joined Watford last week suggests this one didn't have much legs to start with
One of the very earliest rumours saw Ghanaian wing Albert Adomah strongly linked back in May. No truth at all, club sources confirmed.
Some reports the Bluebirds actually had a £2m bid for Leicester captain Wes Morgan accepted. Seems unlikely and hard to see him offering anything different, or better, than what Mackay already has at his disposal.
Links between Benjamin Mendy and Cardiff City certainly had truth in them but the young defender opted to join Marseille last week.
Could Cardiff City be interested in Scott Parker? Seems a decent fit with the England man available for around £2m. No interest confirmed yet, though.
Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak could well leave the Royals this summer and City have been suggested as one option. Nothing more than rumours, though.
Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi was a strange one to emerge earlier this summer. Very hard to see any substance whatsoever to this one.
According to some reports in Ghana, former City loan star Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has flown in for talks and is set to seal a deal in the Welsh capital. Looks like he will leave Panathinaikos this summer but would be a big shock if he returned to Cardiff
It seemed Leon Barnett might be the first summer signing but news has gone quiet in recent weeks. That said, it would not be a surprise to see the big man return after that wonderful loan spell at the end of last season
A former Swan coming to Cardiff? Seems silly but this was another early summer rumour. Malky Mackay is a fan of Danny Graham but very difficult to see any legs in this one.
“Even the small children who didn’t see him play still know about him. Denmark has had a lot of good players in England over the years, but maybe now it is not the same.
“But we have a lot of good young players coming through and maybe now we can reach that level again.”
When it comes to derby games themselves, Cornelius may still be a young player, but he has experienced what facing your most bitter rivals can be like.
For FC Copenhagen, who Cornelius helped to the Danish Superliga title last season, their derby day is against fellow capital club Brondby.
Ironically, Brondby was the side Laudrup played for before his career really took off with a move to Lazio in 1983.
Cornelius already has an idea what a Cardiff versus Swansea derby encounter might be like, admitting he is expecting “war” between the two old enemies.
But he also believes playing in such matches can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a season. “I’m looking forward to that match with Swansea very much,” he said.
“It’s like a war when Cardiff play Swansea I have heard, like the derby we have in Copenhagen against Brondby.
“Anything can happen in a derby and they are fun games to play in.”

Its lucky for cardiff then that Swansea didnt put a bid in for cornelius because he would now be a swans player now. He seems to love Laudrup

Would love it if we had Scott Parker, would complement Whittingham to go forward more.
Nice to see the lad is learning about the club, sounds like a player who will be welcomed hear very easily.
