In his latest blog post, Cardiff City fan Scott Johnson suggests Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker would be the perfect signing for the Bluebirds this summer
Malky Mackay appears to be targeting youth in the transfer market, spending big on young talent that should only increase in value. It is a sensible approach, but he will be well aware that his squad is also lacking in Premier League experience.
He appears to have failed in his pursuit of Celtic’s Victor Wanyama , but an interesting alternative has recently become available at a knock-down price.
The trickle-down effect of Tottenham Hotspur signing Paulinho is that Scott Parker is now available for a mere £2m. The 2011 FWA Player of the Year, who also made the 2012
Premier League Team of the Year, may be out of fashion, but his strengths and attributes would be a real asset to Cardiff in their debut top flight campaign.
Passionate and driven, he is a tenacious midfield presence who protects both the back four and solidifies the midfield. At international level he is used as a bodyguard for Jack Wilshere and there is certainly a vacancy for a similar role at Cardiff, protecting Peter Whittingham.
Last season was disrupted by an Achilles injury he sustained on international duty the previous summer. He did not feature until December and spent the rest of the season regaining his fitness.
With a World Cup on the horizon, Parker will be keen to play regularly at the highest level this season, but the only interested party thus far has been QPR. This would allow him to reunite with Harry Redknapp and remain in London, but would also harm his international prospects.
Kevin Nolan dropped down a division in 2011 to link up with a former manager at West Ham and the long-term security of a five-year deal, but he was 28 at the time and Parker is now 32.
A move to Loftus Road would also require Parker to take a significant pay cut on his wages of around £60,000-a-week, but that is likely to be the case wherever he ends up. Challenging for promotion may also appeal more than a potential relegation battle, but he is certainly an option worth pursuing.
The personal accolades he received while at unfashionable West Ham resulted from his influence during a league game against West Brom. 3-0 down at half time, Hammers captain Parker gave a stirring half-time team talk that inspired a remarkable comeback, with the game ending 3-3.
After the game, striker Carlton Cole revealed: “In the first half we were really, really poor. I must say, Scott was just in the zone. I’ve never seen him like that and I was like, ‘Wow! This is the real deal’.
"I know you could say to yourself, ‘You’re a professional football player, you should have that in you already’. But sometimes you need your captain to come across like that. It was inspirational. If you were in there you’d have a tear in your eye.”
Experience, passion and leadership...these qualities are rarely available for £2m.
