Cornelius: My high transfer fee is a motivation

Thu Jul 11, 2013 11:35 am

New Cardiff City signing Andreas Cornelius insists his hefty price-tag will act as motivation rather than a distraction in the Premier League next season.

Bluebirds' boss Malky Mackay smashed the club's transfer record when he splashed £8.5m to bring the 20-year-old striker in from FC Copenhagen last month.

The young Danish international, who was top-scorer in his home nation's Superliga last campaign, is now training with his new Cardiff teammates and insist he is ready to make the step-up to the English top-flight.

“It’s been easy to settle in. Everyone is very friendly at Cardiff,” said Cornelius.

“I’m very excited to move here. This is a great opportunity. There is a great squad to work with and I’m looking forward to it.

“It was a bit of a surprise. I did not know Copenhagen were going to let me go. It all went quickly. But I just felt that it was the right decision to make.

“I see the price paid as a motivation for me. If Cardiff want to pay that amount of money for me then I must be good and they must believe that I’m good."

Cornelius has just graduated from high school, but said his ambition has always been to play in the Premier League. He vowed that now he had the opportunity he was ready to fire in the goals for the Bluebirds in their forthcoming campaign.

The striker added: "In Denmark the Premier League matches are shown on TV and it is where players want to play. It is the league with the most viewers.

"It might be a bit more difficult to score goals here, but as long as I am in a good team and I can improve all the time then I really think it will work out."

Have the club confirmed the fee as £8.5m ? If not, where has this figure come from?

I'm really excited by this signing, to hear how top clubs were in for him gives me confidence that we've spent money wisely. I'm glad he's here, unlike Ince, he shows he wants to be here and he's willing to learn more of the game and change how he plays to adapt to the Premier League. I have a feeling he will be a great signing for us!

Loved the press conference. Malky gave me a lot of confidence that new players will be arriving and that there is no need to panic even if Ince decides not to come.
