Bluebirds to snatch Mendy?

Sat Jul 06, 2013 1:06 pm

What do we think of this? Could be a great signing if we pull it off.

CARDIFF City hope to hijack Sunderland’s move for Benjamin Mendy with an 11th hour move for the French left-back.

The Bluebirds are prepared to match the Black Cats bid for the 18-year-old and hope to persuade the teenager to play his Premier League football out of Wales next season rather than England.

Le Havre have accepted an offer from Sunderland and but personal terms yet to be fully agreed.

And Cardiff are putting their hopes in exploiting that narrow time window to force a change of mind.

Sources in Cardiff have confirmed that City manager Malky Mackay is a big admirer of the French youth international and believes he could develop into a player of genuine Premier League quality.

That seems to be confirmed by the types of clubs linked with the left-back this summer – Arsenal, Lyon and Marseille – but Mendy appears to be almost over the line as far as a move to Sunderland is concerned.

The youngster was over in the North East on Wednesday and Thursday this week and progress was satisfactory but with nothing been signed yet, Cardiff have not given up hope.

Le Havre president Jean-Pierre Louvel last week told Radio Monte Carlo: “We have reached agreement with Sunderland for the transfer of Mendy.

“It’s now up to him to reach an agreement with them.

“We are okay.”

That statement, and Mendy’s visit to Sunderland, would indicate that the Black Cats are in the driving seat and firm favourites to sign the player.

But with newly-promoted Cardiff having plenty of money to spend in their efforts to become an established Premier League club, Sunderland will be a lot happier once the Mendy deal is rubber-stamped.

The Mendy move is not the only transfer where Sunderland have their hands full.

The Black Cats’ pursuit of Velez Sarsfield right-back Gino Peruzzi is also in the balance after appearing to be all but past the post earlier this week.

The stumbling block seems to be personal terms with Peruzzi’s representatives still in discussions over the deal.

What's the point of writing exactly the same thing as the OP did?

Le Havre defender and Sunderland target Benjamin Mendy wants to join Marseille
Last Updated: July 7, 2013 9:46pm

Le Havre president Jean-Pierre Louvel has warned Marseille that they must match Sunderland's offer for teenager Benjamin Mendy.

Sky Sports understands Mendy will snub a move to Sunderland in favour of a switch to Marseille, but a deal has still to be agreed with Le Havre.

Louvel is not willing to disclose how much Sunderland have offered for the left-back and is waiting to see what Marseille will come up with.

"We have an agreement with Sunderland, but not with Marseille," Louvel told L'Equipe. "There are no offers at the moment. Nothing has materialised.

"Marseille's offer should not be lower than that of Sunderland's.

"Everything will depend on Marseille's proposal. I have nothing against OM and I have a very good relationship with (president) Vincent Labrune.
"About the price, I have a confidentiality agreement with the English club, so I cannot tell you anything. But what is certain is that Marseille's offer should not be below that of Sunderland."

The 19-year-old has reportedly visited Marseille's pre-season training camp to undergo a medical, but Louvel is not troubled by the issue.

He added: "It does not shock me that he goes to visit Marseille. That sounds very normal for him to make his choice.

"But he knows that, to seal a deal with a club, you have to have the green light from Le Havre. And I repeat that we do not negotiate below what Sunderland have offered."

Premier League new boys Cardiff City and Marseille's domestic rivals Lyon have also been linked with Mendy, who is due to be part of France's squad for the European Under 19 Championship in Lithuania later this month.
