Anyone been here? Flying out to Naples next Sunday and staying in Sorrento for the week. Also visiting the famous Pompeii, Herculaneum, going down the Amalfi Coast and to the summit of Mount Vesuvius.
Anyone got an idea what it's like out there? Alcohol prices etc?

Pompeii is fascinating. Naples is dangerous - Cars and people. Expensive to eat and drink as it is all about tourists as I remember.
Get a good guide for the trips - I think it is worth it as you get more out of it than just going yourself. Take water with you, as it is expensive on site and you will need it. I remember being very very warm and the kids constantly wanting/needing drinks.

Rough
full of thieves
watch your gear.......I met a cyclist who lived in nothern Italy, He went touring in the south and claims that before riding up any local mountain through the villages, he had to enter local cafes and declare that he wasn't undercover police or looking for any trouble. just incase they mistook him for undercover police and killed him.

Will definitely need the water, 30-35 Celsius throughout the week with the humidity hitting 80%.

Loads of nice places to eat . sorrento is a very nice little town . The amalfi coast is amazing . Worth a day trip to island of Capri too . Get cable car to top of island . Aside from Naples a stunning part of the world. Positano , amalfi, and ravello all towns on coast well worth doing . Take a boat trip up coast from amalfi town too . Very nice .

Herculaneum is amazing! It's far more impressive than Pompeii, the whole city is pretty much perfectly preserved whereas Pompeii is pretty much just the shells.

Went there in 2004, flew into Naples and stayed 1st night there. My wife and I were having a pizza in Naples that evening when we heard gun shots and then a women screaming. The waiter advised us to finish up quickly, we heeded his advice alright. As for Sorrento nice enough place but expensive, amalfi coast has some fabulous scenery. My advice would be get out of Naples as soon as you can dirty and dangerous. Do see the pompeii etc and Capri is worth a visit but again very expensive as this is where the rich and famous stay.

I'm off tomorrow morning! Will come back with any tips but planning on getting around to see most of the bits mentioned. I know plenty of people that have been and said its stunning with plenty to do. Not cheap but then where is cheap?! I spent £150 on an all dayer in cardiff yesterday where some pints on mill lane were £5! I'm going half board but taking a good grand or so to be safe.

I went for 2 weeks in September for a wedding. Food is reasonable, if you go down the side streets and find small family run restaurants.
A bit more upmarket, I really reccomend Don Pedro's
Http://www.ristorantedonpedro.itCall them and they will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back afterwards.
You can pick up a two pint jug of nastro Azzurro for €5.50 to €6 in quite a few places, so not too bad!
We loved it and will deffinately go back. Enjoy
