Cardiff City have discovered size does matter in the Premier League – and Malky Mackay must hope that doesn’t spell bad news for the Bluebirds.
Two metres have been added to the length of the Bluebirds’ pitch to bring the Cardiff City Stadium surface in line with strict Premier League regulations.
League chiefs demand a playing surface of 105 metres by 68 metres and, while that might favour Bluebirds fliers Craig Bellamy and Craig Noone, City defenders won’t relish the thought of the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard having extra space to utilise.
City’s old Ninian Park pitch was 103 metres long and it stayed that way in the new stadium, with a seven-metre dead-ball line to accommodate the Cardiff Blues rugby team. But with the Blues back at the Arms Park there was no problem for City meeting Premier League criteria.
Work started immediately after the Bon Jovi concert last month and the elongated pitch will be ready for the pre-season friendly with Italian outfit Chievo on August 3.
The opening Premier League games are against Manchester City on August 24 and Everton on August 31.
“There has been a lot of work on the surface, including re-seeding,” said stadium manager Wayne Nash.
“A lot of tender care and attention has been paid by our head groundsman Phil Williams and his staff.”
