Is Andreas Cornelius a good signing for Cardiff City?
We look at Cardiff’s signing of Andreas Cornelius and see if he’ll be a good signing for the club.
Andreas Cornelius, Cardiff striker
When a club splashes out a record transfer fee on a player, you’d expect the fans to have normally heard of their new arrival. For supporters of Cardiff City, you can’t blame them if they’ve never heard of Andreas Cornelius.
The 20-year-old has just made a £7.5 million move from FC Copenhagen, having passed a medical at Cardiff and he’s signed on for five years. Cornelius is Cardiff’s first signing since they were promoted to the Premier League with Malky Mackay already proving he’s ready to spend big to keep the club there.
Goals are a priceless commodity in football and Cornelius appears to have a fair few in his locker. He bagged 18 times in 32 games for Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga, ensuring he was the top scorer in 2012/13. The transfer fee might seem pricy, indeed it shatters Cardiff’s previous record, the £3 million paid for Michael Chopra to Sunderland in 2010, but Cornelius might be a worthwhile investment.
Danish international
The striker already has international ambitions, having won seven caps for Denmark already. He also bagged a goal against the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier, showing potential on a higher level. Danish and Copenhagen fans are certain Cornelius is a superstar in the making, but Cardiff fans will take some convincing.
Their new frontman has only enjoyed one season of first team football; indeed he only made his professional debut in April 2012 before joining the squad full-time ahead of the beginning of the 2012/13 campaign. Things have really taken off this season, but the Premier League is a different kettle of fish to the Danish Superliga.
Cornelius certainly possesses some promising attributes though. Goal scoring already appears a natural talent for the young forward, but technique isn’t the only weapon Cornelius has. He’s also 6ft 4in, a frame that might help him adapt better to the Premier League than other young European strikers learning their trade in England.
Will he make the grade?
Gifted talents like Cornelius are often eaten for breakfast by English centre backs. Gnarled, grizzly and not afraid of a tackle or two, the Premier League boasts a level of physicality amongst defenders that isn’t present in other European Leagues. Better and more experienced strikers than Cornelius have found goals hard to come by.
But Cornelius’ size makes him harder to handle. Cardiff can use him as a route one option, holding the ball up to bring others into to play or they can utilise his technique, playing the ball into feet. Cornelius was linked with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal earlier in the season, so Cardiff have done some crafty business, nipping in and securing his signature.
Talented yes, but Cardiff need him to deliver the goods. Mackay’s side found goals a little hard to come by last season despite winning the league, indeed Heidar Helguson top scored with nine and he’s now out of contract. The second top scorers were midfielders Peter Whittingham and Aron Gunnarsson with eight apiece.
Pressure
Cornelius has clearly been identified as the man to come in and fire Cardiff to safety. That’s a lot of pressure for someone so young. However, he’s made a fine start to his footballing career so why not enjoy a baptism of fire in the Premier League? It’s certainly a good way for him to make a name for himself.
What’s more, Cardiff fans will be pleased by the intent shown by their club. Cornelius is a promising young talent, one for the future and his signing lays down a marker. With financial woes of previous years fully behind them, Cardiff are to ready to splash the cash to become an established Premier League outfit.
Cornelius might not even be the record signing come this time next week. Tom Ince is discussing terms on an £8 million switch from Blackpool to help boost their attacking firepower. It’s clear Cardiff mean business. And Andreas Cornelius is the first sign of that.

He seems really good, if he has another season like last he will be worth twice as much this time next year. If he features against West Ham he will score. Big part of our future
