Alan Warboys

Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:14 pm

I remember him being our record signing during the latter part of the 1970 season when we paid Sheffield Wednesday £42,000 for him he was brought as a replacement for John Toshack who had joined Liverpool about 6 weeks prior for a record out going fee of £110,000.

The Warboys fee equates at todays rate of £585,786.60,taking into consideration we recently payed for £8,000,000,000.00 for Andreas Cornelius and have a bid in for Tom Ince in the region of the same figure this shows how much Cardiff City have progressed.

The historic inflation calculator link below will work out how past players fees compare to present value.

Incidentally The Toshack fee is £1,534,203.00.

I remember Warboys coming to us. Didn't understand much then about it all but if I had the same mentality then like I do now I would be fuming about it all.

Interesting post but you've got to take into context the way modern football has changed compered to any other industry. The tv deals, ticket prices, sponsership deals etc has meant prices regarding football has far outstripped inflation.

One example. There was a programme on tv years ago where an mp lived on dole in newcastle for 2 weeks to see if he could live on benefit money, at the end of the two weeks he had enough to go and watch newcastle utd, when he went back 30 years later he could not afford a ticket. This was mainly due to the massive above inflation rise in ticket prices.

Sky tv money and the influx of rich foreign owners mean much more of a clubs outlay and income is spent on player fees and salaries. It's why so many clubs get into trouble.

If cornelios goes on to be anything like alan warboys he'll be one hell of a signing.

Also Cardiff were in the old second div when we bought warboys, we've just hit the tv prem league gold mine and this appears to be the going rate for players, if you don't match it you'll prob go down. Although to me the fees we paid on cornelious and ince are crazy and way over the top, it's a sticky situation for malky.

For that price he had better be good!

I was also there for the Carlisle match when Warboys scored 4 - including fastest hat-trick ever by a City player. It was 6th March 1971. May be wrong but I've got a feeling the score at half-time was 0 - 0.

Carlisle had a Cardiff born player playing in defence that day - can anyone name him?

Warboys' goals all came in the first half, in fact I'm pretty sure he had scored three of them by the ten minute mark.

As for your question, I think his name was Bob Delgado - I'm sure I can remember watching him play regularly for some parks side over at Waterhall/Ashcroft Park back in the mid to late 60's.

It just goes to show how football has lost touch with the real world, men in shorts kicking a ball gets 10 times more than a brain surgeon, bonkers.

Yes your right the score was 4-0 at half time, didn't Warboys play with his hamstring heavily bandaged..
If I remember rightly he came back for a cup game against Brentford??? and punched a Brentford defender in the stomach at a corner and was sent off.

Warboys last game for City was on Sept 9th, 1972. A home game at Ninian Park v Aston Villa. City lost 0-2, crowd of 16707.

He signed for Sheffield Utd, in a deal that saw Gil Reece & Dave Powell join City.
