Kevin Phillips: Ince is better player than Zaha.

Tue Jul 02, 2013 3:00 pm

Cardiff City target Tom Ince a better player than Man Utd signing Wilfried Zaha, says Kevin Phillips.

Phillips played with both young talents last season after his January switch from Blackpool to Crystal Palace and rates Tom Ince really highly.

Veteran striker Kevin Phillips reckons Cardiff City would be getting a better player in Tom Ince than Manchester United got in Wilfried Zaha.

Phillips played with both young talents last season, alongside 21-year-old Ince at Blackpool and at Crystal Palace with 20-year-old Zaha.

In January Zaha signed for Manchester United for £15m before being loaned back to the south Londoners and now Malky Mackay is reportedly closing in on Ince for an £8m fee.

Phillips, whose penalty in the play-of final fired Palace back into the Premier League this summer, insist it is the Bluebirds who would be getting the bigger talent.

“I really rate Tom, he’s a great player. I’ve been lucky enough to play with him and Wilfred Zaha over the last couple of seasons and for me young Tom at the moment is just ahead of Zaha,” said Phillips, who turns 40 this month, during a radio interview with talkSPORT.

“He will get you more goals and he will threaten the back-line a lot more. Tom has got a bit of everything for me He will attract two or three players towards him and he will get his head up and he will pass and he will move.

“He looks to get in behind the back four without the ball too. He makes excellent runs.

“At this precise moment he is ahead of Zaha. Wilfred is an exciting talent, but Tom right now is going to get you goals. He had 18 goals last year and that tells you everything.

“He really is an exciting player and I’m looking forward to seeing him over the next few years.”

Young Ince is the son of former Manchester United favourite and England international Paul Ince who is currently also his son’s manager at Blackpool.

The signing would prove a major coup for Mackay with the exciting wideman linked with a host of top clubs including Liverpool

who sold him to Blackpool and still have first refusal on re-signing him.

Phillips, who is hoping to stay at Palace in the top-flight himself next campaign, said he was surprised Ince looked to be on the verge of a move to the Welsh capital.

But he said he thought the chance to play regular Premier league football at Cardiff might well be proving a motivating factor,

“I’m surprised a few other clubs have not come in for Tom to be honest,” added Phillips.

“Maybe this will start a bit of a merry-go-round. Cardiff have dipped their toes in and now maybe the bigger clubs will wait to see what happens and then come in at the last minute.

“I’m quite surprised with the links to Cardiff because Tom is one of the most exciting young talents in the country.

“He would maybe play more games at Cardiff and having a dad who has played the game he is probably advising him and telling him that if he goes to Cardiff he will be playing week in and week out and that will bring your game on.

No disrespect to Cardiff, but they are probably going to be fighting relegation for most of the season and if it does not work out come the end, if Tom has had a good season, then he will probably move on again.”

Kevin Phillips should recognise a good striker when he sees one :ayatollah:

I agree with Phillips. Man United wasted too much on Zaha.

Zaha - £15 million, Ince - £8 million, Nathan Redmond - £2 million. Is Nathan Redmond a better bet at only £2 million and they are all pretty much alike, all young and all will improve.
