A forum for all things Cardiff City

The Slovenian striker joined the Bluebirds on a four-year contract in July 2012.
He was, however, to find first team opportunities hard to come by in south Wales and spent much of his debut campaign kicking his heels on the sidelines.
Velikonja is aware that he is likely to find it even tougher to earn recognition next term, with Cardiff having secured promotion to the Premier League.
The 24-year-old is up for the challenge, though, and insists he will only consider a switch elsewhere if he finds himself forced further down Malky Mackay's attacking pecking order.
Velikonja told Sportal: "My first goal is to be among the players who are in the squad for the Premier League.
"I'm working hard to succeed but I know that sometimes that is not enough.
"My status is likely to depend on arrivals, but I will not give up easily. I never have before and I never will.
"I know I am good enough so I will fight for my place. If I don't get a lot of opportunities then I will have to find another solution. However, I'm not thinking about that right now."

that's what we want to be hearing in fairness, still hungry to play. perhaps he'll suit the prem more than the championship.

Fair play he has a great attitude

Got to give him a year to settle. I personally don't think he will be good enough, but he deserves a years grace to bed in. Robert pires looked absolutely shocking in his first season at arsenal, so if pires can struggle we need to give veli time too.

Send him out on loan to the Championship or League 2 for this season. But id prefer if we just get rid of him.

With hair like that he can go to Brighton on loan lol

Seems like he will be moved on judging by his comments. Saying he will have to rethink if he gets pushed further down the pecking order and with news of a new striker signing I think Velikonja may be leaving.

Hes got what it takes, just needs to be abit faster. A loan would suit him where he would be a near first choice striker

Refreshing to hear a player wanting to prove himself.
Too many players these days are happy enough to sit back and collect their money.

When you are getting muscled off the ball by teenagers in development games, you have no chance stepping up to senior level unfortunately.

That is wishful thinking

Agreed.
Sadly, I feel he as no future at this club.

I'd send him out on a season long loan to a club where he's almost guaranteed to start, providing we get more forwards in of course. Too soon to cut him loose, and what if he does live up to his potential this year? Best off sending him on loan, if it works out he's still ours if not we can sell on next year won't make much difference to us.

has to go out on loan for me. cant sell a player who has had no impact whatsoever in championship level by letting him rot in the development squad for another year - what are you meant to say to prospective buyers - hes absolutely garbage and didnt cut it with us? we will loose all the fee we paid for him. send him out for a minimum of 6 months and let him get some competitive game time.

I'm a massive fan of him but I feel we need to send him out on loan because its better playing on loan at the championship rather than a development player

True. He didn't do himself any favours in the last development game v Charlton either. Very poor.

The only player who impressed for city in the development final was Ralls so you can't blame him

I'm not blaming him, or any one else for that matter,,just pointing out my observations of the player too which this thread relates.
He's certainly got a lot to do (Velinkonja) if he wants to figure in MM plans this season.

We currently have 5 strikers in front of him at the moment . Best he can hope for is a loan deal I'm afraid.

I'd send him out on loan for a few months to see how he does playing with some decent players regularly. If he's good then we can bring him back and if he's not then we can get rid in January.
