Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

Fri Jun 28, 2013 5:42 am

I sincerely hope Peter Whittingham is given his chance to shine in the premier league. He is a class act when given time on the ball, cracking vision and certainly knows how to pass!

I hope malky doesn't toss him as side as he did at the end of season just passed. Yes he needed To rest, but you may agree with me, that the style of the Prem should suit whitts to a tee.

His free kick accuracy, corners, penalties, passing and ability to read games will in my opinion be enhanced in the top division.

Let's hope he's given his chance to reach the heights we all know he's capable of.

Did you miss Whitts at the end of last season?
What are your thoughts going into the top league?

My sentiments exactly Merlin :malky:

He is still the best passer weve got and ball retention will be important in the PL.

Hes been our best player for 4 years and deserves his chance.

I agree, he's a terrific player and I'm glad for him we have made it to the Prem, he has stuck with us to be fair to him.

He's a great player and the laziness we saw in him under DJ has long gone now under MM.

he chases back and runs more, yes he needed a rest at the end of last season and Kim did very well,

I'm sure MM will stick with him and as u say I hope he does well cos it should suit him down to a tee.

He does what he wants :ayatollah:

Agree with everything you say except that he was tossed aside.Just a case of being severely jaded after playing more games than any other player. It was also nice to see a good Cardif side without him.I think he'll do well this season and then(just to be contreversial )we may well cash in on him.

Craig, Whittingham in my opinion goes missing on most big games. Also the reason why Whitts after 7 years has been in the Championship is because thats where he belongs, a classy Championship player. Have you ever thought why he has been there for so long? and yes he has class, but he is not consistent over a season.

I agree he does go missing on big games, I think Kimbo will be the number one chose this season :ayatollah:

Totally agree with op. Whitts is a class act and will be fine in the prem. Lets just hope malky doesnt ruin him again by playing him as centre back. Thats the only reason he went missing at times. Play him as an attacking midfielder in the prem and watch him shine.

Been a huge player for us.

But I think he will be like taraat(only in the way he plays! Not the off the field crap) in the prem. Great when we are dominating a game and winning well, but missing when we are losing and under the cosh away from home.

Over the last 4 years no outfield player has played more minutes than Peter Whittingham and he has, season after season, been in the top 3 for goals scored and assists.

As already said no player at the club is better at keeping the ball, no player at the club has the quality of delivery at set pieces and no player has a better range of passing.

For those reasons I agree with you Craig and Whitts deserves his chance in the team next season, not a guarantee of a starting position, but a chance to show that he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

For all those who rubbish him I bet if we have a free kick on the edge of the box or a last minute penalty next season and we need to score to get a result every last one of them will be looking for Whitts.

And that says it all.

Whitts strengths are one his passing and two his set pieces. Both went missing half way through the season. His passing became none existent, his corners struggled to reach the near post and his set pieces failed to get over the wall. He was given plenty of time to correct this but failed. He was given a rest but failed to regain his starting place. Most other players who have gone this way have never been able to get back.

I fear for Whitts that he might not comeback. A shame really because he has had his moments with us. However he has not been consistent and this could be his downfall. I'm not expecting to see much of him next season.

Saying he goes missing in big games, is not rubbishing him he is a class player, but Annis said 7 yrs in the C'ship must tell you something, and yes if there was a free kick at the end Whits would be the one I would have faith in to take it :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I agree with some of your points Annis. But I believe he was in the championship so long as nobody wanted to take the RISK on him to take him up. But he was by far the best midfielder in the league, and now he has the chance to shine, I think he will.

Whitts needs to up his work rate

He can't go missing in the premier league

He might do, but will he get the chance, I think he will be coming off the bench to try to make his mark :ayatollah:

We couldnt have had any big games in the first half of last season then

He was our stand out performer up until xmas, after xmas Malky kept pushing him further and further back and this doesnt suit his game IMO.

Plus the fact we relied on him so heavily before xmas, he was rarely rested, and back end of the season this burnt him out.

I think the fact Cardiff paid Premier League wages whilst in the championship might have something to do with him not leaving for the PL.

being a bit inconsistant may be a reason why he has not been picked up by a prem team. Was he not subject of bid from fulham or west ham though? It's not like he hasnt had interest. Signing long term contracts may also be a reason. He would simply be too expensive with the contract he has with Cardiff... In my opinion he is one of the best players we have ever had the pleasure to have at CCFC, and should go down as a legend

Re: Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

He will go down as a City legend in my eyes anyway. My favourite player in terms of quality and viewing. :malky:

Stant is my most favourite player but for different reasons.

Re: Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

Fri Jun 28, 2013 8:20 am

Whitts is a player that will divide opinion. At his best he is simply the best player we've got. Whether that's often enough is debatable.

I don't think it's fair to use the fact he's still with us as strength to the argument that he wouldn't make it in the Prem.

Many Prem managers have wanted him but he's shown loyalty that people like Ledley, Johnson, Loovens, etc., never did and stuck with us. I wouldn't criticise him for that.

Having said all that this season will be the make or break season for him. If he delivers then he proved some people wrong, if he doesn't then he proves them right.

I personally think he will deliver but I agree with others above in that he has to be played further forward in the position Kimbo and Mutch were playing at the end of the season simply because his passing and shooting are such a threat around the edge of the area :ayatollah:

That was a massive dissapointment for me last season that Malky finally put Gunnar in defensive midfield but never gave Whitts the opportunity to play attacking midfield. We know from his last two seasons under Jones that he is much better in this position.

Witts is a class player more than capable of doing a job for city in the premier but is he in malkys plan's,i hope so and believe he will be.

Its scary what you read on here......

Whitts owned games in the first half of the season (and the season before that), set the pace and strategy. When Malky reverted to type after we built our lead and went defensive Whitts suffered, although the amount of games in a short period always seem to kill him.

Kimbo was great, but he is a 10. He needs to receive the ball, do a flick, nick or spin and attack further up field. We may have more time on the ball in the prem but you need to do more with it when we have it. I just don't see Kimbo as a playmaker, strolling around deep in the midfield setting the pace. IMO Mutch is more of a threat to Whitts.

Whitts will be back, we have a big target and speed up front, his passing will exploit this.

IMO our best player since Dave Bennett......

Good post

Agree on Kimbo, I think just off the striker would be his best position.

I believe that he might struggle to get into the team myself although I think he deserves a chance to shine. I can see MM bringing in another 2/3 midfielders as well which will further push him down the pecking order.

With the 4-3-3 formation that we played last season I can see it being brought into the Premier League. Whittingham didn't start in that formation and we did well when he didn't so it may be hard to see more of him in a higher division.

What I hope for though is that he can re-capture his old immense form and show it in any chance that he gets.

Re: Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

Yes whitts is good , BUT ! one of his biggest down falls is ,he wont or hardly ever goes in on a 50 /50 ball,
Never or again Hardly ever wins or even goes up for a 50/50 heading situation.
If you remember when Malky first took over ,Malky said everyone had to be a defender as well.
For about a month or 2 Whitts did it ,but slowly slowly that stopped, in the prem everyone has to track back to help out.
If Whitts can do that I'm sure and hope he is given his chance to shine.

Re: Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

Fri Jun 28, 2013 10:28 am

Whitts will be a squad player at best next year IMO, especially as we'll not doubt bring a midfielder or 2 in.

Re: Peter Whittingham will be back to his best!

Fri Jun 28, 2013 10:44 am

I've said this for ages, the style of play in the Prem will get the best out of Whitts. As long as he's not playing as part of the back 4. He needs to be given freedom on the ball to spread the play how he likes it, not just pass to the centre backs and let them lump it forward

So Whitts doesnt track back?

F8ck me if he played any deeper last season he would have been playing the playstations in the family stand.
