The Day That Changed Behaviour

Cardiff City Football Club have come a long way on the field and I am really looking forward to seeing us play in the Premier League. The big name players and the biggest clubs coming to the CCS will be a fantastic experience for us to savour and hopefully it will be the case for many years to come.

But the biggest change or step forwards we have taken are probably off the pitch and changing the perception of how Cardiff fans are viewed around the country.

I take my 11 year old daughter home and away and have always managed to steer clear of trouble, if and when it has taken place and I hope that continues to be the case.

I have never had an interest in being involved in trouble at football, though I do admit I may have been a pain in the ass for my mates on the odd occasion when I may have had one pint too many  but certainly never involved in hooliganism.

We as a club had 16 police free home games last season and just the one arrest at the CCS, what a turnaround to years gone by.

What has been the reason for the fall in arrest figures ?

I am fortunate enough to be part of the travel group with our club and see the work and planning that goes in to try and make every away match we attend trouble free.

The work of our club, police and the design and set up of our stadium without a doubt have been massive contributors in the change of scenes from the ones we used to see on Sloper Road at Ninian Park.

Another factor and possibly one that those who have sought to look for trouble in the past, now think at least twice about is because of the subsequent sentencing handed down after one particular game.

I know that many of those sentences were well over the top especially to those who wanted to be near the action and watch what was going on and were severely dealt with.

I was at that game with my son and daughter and thankfully never witnessed any of the trouble but with the eyes of the world upon us as a club and I suspect as fans I hope we will not see any repeat of these scenes at any ground.

Club has come on light years! Just from buzzing when we signed someone like danny hill, kevin evans and des hamilton, thinking we had signed proper young talent. Its cringing when you look back and think that we had just signed a "quality player" when you look at where we are now and the young lad we have just signed!

Rivalry will always play apart in football and TBH is one of the reasons why the Premier League (& English football in general) is so popular abroad.

But anyone who lived through the 70's/80's & 90's knows it got completely out of hand. It took years to resolve the problem and yes it is true that stiffer sentencing guide lines played a part but so to did self regulation of fans by fans.

BigGwyn's book about the "Rise & Fall of the Valley RAMS" is a superb read on this particular subject and was pioneering in its day.

Yes Cardiff City has come a long way since the dark days and using a sensitive pun the club is almost 'unrecognisable' from the one a few years ago because it has changed so much.

I personally think that is brilliant and I often take my 9 year old daughter to high profile games as well and she absolutely loves it. We are very lucky but a lot of hard work has gone into making us such a successful club but we certainly aren't finished yet, Champions League here we come  . :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

We still have plenty of lads knocking about who would be more than happy to take part in any kind of fisticuffs, what's changed it for most though are the over the top punishments dished out for very little. How can someone who nonces kids get less jail time than lads who had a punch up with like minded folk

Disagree a bit. we were all washed up long before the chelsea game carl. everyone knew it was over but the older lot owed chelsea one from years back and it had to happen. So many were on our coach from cardiff and it was 'f**k it - its chelsea and they are worth doing bird for' but nobody expected the fuckers to jail everything that moved

The culture changed and the police were clued up. You can not get away with swearing without a 10 year sentence. That is why it stopped or mostly stopped. Back then you could get away with more.
I loved the buzz back then but football got civalised

I disagree it was a single day. We were changing years before that. Technology changed it more than anything in my view. Police tapping phones, cctv in towns / cities / in the grounds, coupled with ott bans. The stoke game in early 2000's saw loads banned and I believe things started to change from there. At the Chelsea game I saw loads of naughty peeps out I hadn't seen down the city for a good couple of years (it was like a south wales reunion  . They knew they were running a risk of getting banned but didn't think they'd go to prison with such lengthy sentences.

I'm thrilled with the shift away from the bad old days, I've taken my son down the city since he was 3, there were quite a few occasions where we left early to miss the sloper road crowd. I certainly wouldn't have taken him away in those days. He's 15 soon and we don't go away without him now. I haven't seen much bother at away games for ages, I think it's a genral shift at most clubs for the reasons I've mentioned . If someone had told me ten years ago that on new years day i'd park my car in a street just outside st Andrews and walk to the ground talking to brum fans with my family I'd have laffed, but that's exactly the way it was last new years day and I loves it!

Disagree with the op.

Stoke away 12/13 years ago was the day when everything changed. Massive sentences and 10 year bans showed the old bill meant business.

After that game the ccfc away following was and could never the same again. Chelsea was a one game throwback.

Spot on both of you.

Chelsea was a throw back, not the day that changed Cardiff Fans Behaviour.

There is every chance a Chelsea Situation will happen again, possibly next season, Man Utd and Everton Away and Home both
two that could be very naughty.

Very true, a one off could happen next season.
But this at Stoke stopped trouble happening at least 10 times a season

like I said above! In fairness to the OP he's a relatively new fan who wasn't around in those days so would not have known, but maybe it was misguided of him to post such bold statements without knowing the facts.
