Celtric manager Neil Lennon says the club have not agreed a deal with Cardiff City for Victor Wanyama but admits he expects the Kenyan to leave this summer
Celtic manager Neil Lennon insists Cardiff City will have to increase their £10m offer for central midfield player Victor Wanyama.
Lennon admits he is resigned to losing the 21-year-old Kenyan this summer and says: “I am aware of Cardiff interest in our player, but nothing has been agreed.”
Celtic accepted a £12m transfer fee with Southampton for Wanyama, but the player and his agents could not agree personal terms and turned down the proposed move.
It is certain Cardiff are prepared to splash out £10m, but may have to go higher with Lennon saying: “It looks likely Victor will move at some stage this summer, we have not agreed a fee with Cardiff.”
Wanyama was outstanding for Celtic during their Champions League campaign last season and scored when the Scottish champions defeated Barcelona at home.
Celtic paid less than £1m for Wanyama, whose brother McDonald Mariga plays for Parma, when they signed him from Belgian club Beerschot in 2011. He scored nine goals from midfield for Celtic last season, but was booked 15 times and sent off twice.
Wanyama is currently in Kenya and his agent, Ivan Modia, says they will take their time with a potential transfer and will not be rushed.
But City striker Nicky Maynard believes the Bluebirds’ bid for Wanyama sends out a powerful message to the Premier League.
Nicky Maynard
The marksman was manager Malky Mackay’s big signing last summer, arriving for £2.5m from West Ham, but it looks like that sort of transfer fee is going to be blown out of the water this time around.
After missing most of his first campaign in the Welsh capital with injury, 26-year-old Maynard is determined now to make his mark in the top flight.
But with Mackay already linked with some big-money moves Maynard accepts he is going to face stiff competition for his place next term.
But he welcomes the challenge and believes the ambition being shown in trying to snare Wanyama illustrates how determined the Bluebirds are not to be one-season wonders in their first top-flight campaign in more than half a century.
“That’s a lot of money for most teams, but the transfer fees for players have sky-rocketed, particularly in the Premier League,” said Maynard.
“I’m not sure it’s a good thing or not, but he price tag is down to the clubs. What it does do is send out a message about the level of our ambition.
“It shows we are not going into the Premier League believing we are a club that is going to get relegated. We want to stay there and become an established Premier League team.
“If that means making big transfers, for big money, than so be it. The most important thing is that Cardiff City stay in the Premier League.
“I look forward to new players coming in and to the competition.
It’s the kind of thing that kicks you on.
“We are in the Premier and we need the extra talent and the extra experience. We want to stay in the Premier and every new face that can help us do that is more than welcome.”
Whoever may come through the door this summer Maynard himself admits he still has a lot to prove to the club’s supporters after last season.
In his third outing for his new club, away at Millwall in September, the luckless frontman ruptured cruciate knee ligaments and needed surgery. It was a blow which was to keep him out of almost the whole of the campaign with Maynard only able to watch from the stands as his team-mates stormed to the Premier League taking the Championship title in the process.
In the final game of the season at Hull, Maynard made a late cameo appearance off the bench and scored from the penalty spot too.
It may not have been much, but he admits it gave him a big lift before the summer break.
“Playing that game at Hull was a boost to me, getting the goal too, it was a nice end to a horrible season,” he said. “I went away happier than I would have without that game under my belt. I’ve had no problems since, the knee is feeling great so, touch wood, that’s the end of my problems. I can just concentrate on scoring goals for City.”
And Maynard can look forward to testing his readiness for the top flight against Spanish giants Real Sociedad, who are on their way to Cardiff City Stadium over the first weekend in August.
The clash the La Liga outfit, preparing for European Championship League football, has not yet been officially confirmed but sources in Spain say it is ‘99 per cent certain to go ahead’.
Mexican international Carlos Vela, a former Arsenal and West Brom forward, and highly-rated central defender Inigo Martinez, are Sociedad’s star players and will be in their squad for the trip to South Wales.

Lennon can go do one if he thinks he's worth more than £10m
Wed Jun 26, 2013 5:05 pm
I don't blame Celtic either they wouldn't accept 12.5m then cpl days later accept 10m from us , they would be stupid to , the only way we have any chance of getting Wanyama is matching Southamptons bid . I just cant see us spending 12.5m on 1 player though , would be shocked if we did .

Stop fannying about and make a deal with celtic, wanyama said they have already agreed to meet personal terms so just sort it out before someone like Liverpool or arsenal come in for him. Big opportunity missed if we dont come up with the extra 2 million imo
Wed Jun 26, 2013 5:18 pm
At least it is true we made a bid.

Arsenal have CMs such as Ramsey, Arteta, Cazorla, Wilshere, Diaby, Rosicky etc. They won't need Wanyama. Liverpool said they won't make a bid unless they get rid of Henderson, Henderson isn't moving. It's only Southampton to compete with us, 12m is a joke
Wed Jun 26, 2013 5:26 pm
I thought we had a bid accepted...
Wed Jun 26, 2013 5:38 pm
Why should we meet their valuation? The Southampton bid is not an acceptable bid anymore because the player will not go there. Newport County could bid £100million for Wanyama but he is never going to go there, it doesn't mean Celtic can ask all clubs to bid the same.
They can now wait until a club comes in with an acceptable bid.
So it's all dead until someone blinks, we had better not blink otherwise other clubs will know we fold and pay higher.

Don't do it Malky, they bought him for £900k

Lennon said he "expected" Wanyama to leave this summer so for whatever reason Celtic look resigned to losing the player.
Therefore I would stick with the £10m bid and view it a bonus if the deal came off, if it didn't then it was right for us to self impose a financial ceiling and on this occasion the deal went over what we thought was acceptable.

Totally agree.
There is no situation where Celtic have accepted a bid AND Wanyama has accepted terms. WHEN this scenario comes about then Malky decides whether to match them or walk away.
Wanyama has no a acceptable value yet as no club has come up with a fee plus wage offer that is acceptable to all three parties.
This is like people questioning no English club coughing up £10million for the rather cheap Tevez. Well many could afford the fee but never the wages. This is the situation Southampton are in with Wanyama.
Even if Celtic accept our £10milliom bid that wouldn't be the end of it as Southampton could bid the same and use the £2.5million difference to enhance Wanyama's wage

i dont want to lose him for the sake of 2mil.we've got a minimum 60mil for the forthcoming season,2mil is nothing.

£10m + £2m after so many appearances. Simple as that and that is fair. If he is good enough to become a Premier League regular then they get more money. If hes yet another SPL player who fails to make the grade down South then they dont get the £2m.
If the have any belief in Wanyama's ability they'd be happy to agree to that deal and be confident of getting the £2m down the road.

That seems to be what is happening. As you said it comes down to the destination of the £2.5m difference between what we have bid and what Southampton have bid and whether the player/agent or the club get their hands on it.

Really don't want us going over 5/6m for any one player . Not until and if we can become established in top flight .

I'm afraid you're going to have to get used to us paying over 5/6m for any one player or we are not going to get anywhere and will be relegated as quick as we got to the Premier League. It's the greed that comes with being in the best league in the world that hurts clubs, Malky knows what he is doing.

Norwich are testament to the way it can be done . People forget our current balance sheet looks dire .

All this 'lets do it the Swansea way or Norwich way' is utopian. They're blinding examples because they're a rarity. Its not a model or something that can be replicated with ease. For that you must give each club credit. Also the market dictates what can be done.
I really wish we could follow this amazing way of spending little and bringing in quality players but thats a rarity and if Malky spent 2 months looking around the globe for such a player to save money and could not find said talent there would be uproar.
You cant have it both ways. Malky knows what he is doing. People will slate him for the Velikonja signing, I still believe Tan wanted Etien, not Malky. Nothing about Etien tells me he is a Malky type player. Hes not strong, hes not a work horse and he's not a player comes across as a battler. Draw your own conclusions from that.
