Celtic manager Neil Lennon insists Cardiff City will have to increase their £10m offer for central midfield player Victor Wanyama.

Lennon admits he is resigned to losing the 21-year-old Kenyan this summer and says: “I am aware of Cardiff interest in our player, but nothing has been agreed.”

Celtic accepted a £12m transfer fee with Southampton for Wanyama, but the player and his agents could not agree personal terms and turned down the proposed move.

It is certain Cardiff are prepared to splash out £10m, but may have to go higher with Lennon saying: “It looks likely Victor will move at some stage this summer, we have not agreed a fee with Cardiff.”

Wanyama was outstanding for Celtic during their Champions League campaign last season and scored when the Scottish champions defeated Barcelona at home.

Celtic paid less than £1m for Wanyama, whose brother McDonald Mariga plays for Parma, when they signed him from Belgian club Beerschot in 2011. He scored nine goals from midfield for Celtic last season, but was booked 15 times and sent off twice.

Wanyama is currently in Kenya and his agent, Ivan Modia, says they will take their time with a potential transfer and will not be rushed.

But City striker Nicky Maynard believes the Bluebirds’ bid for Wanyama sends out a powerful message to the Premier League.

Nicky Maynard
The marksman was manager Malky Mackay’s big signing last summer, arriving for £2.5m from West Ham, but it looks like that sort of transfer fee is going to be blown out of the water this time around.

After missing most of his first campaign in the Welsh capital with injury, 26-year-old Maynard is determined now to make his mark in the top flight.

But with Mackay already linked with some big-money moves Maynard accepts he is going to face stiff competition for his place next term.

But he welcomes the challenge and believes the ambition being shown in trying to snare Wanyama illustrates how determined the Bluebirds are not to be one-season wonders in their first top-flight campaign in more than half a century.

“That’s a lot of money for most teams, but the transfer fees for players have sky-rocketed, particularly in the Premier League,” said Maynard.

“I’m not sure it’s a good thing or not, but he price tag is down to the clubs. What it does do is send out a message about the level of our ambition.

“It shows we are not going into the Premier League believing we are a club that is going to get relegated. We want to stay there and become an established Premier League team.

“If that means making big transfers, for big money, than so be it. The most important thing is that Cardiff City stay in the Premier League.

“I look forward to new players coming in and to the competition.

It’s the kind of thing that kicks you on.

“We are in the Premier and we need the extra talent and the extra experience. We want to stay in the Premier and every new face that can help us do that is more than welcome.”

Whoever may come through the door this summer Maynard himself admits he still has a lot to prove to the club’s supporters after last season.

In his third outing for his new club, away at Millwall in September, the luckless frontman ruptured cruciate knee ligaments and needed surgery. It was a blow which was to keep him out of almost the whole of the campaign with Maynard only able to watch from the stands as his team-mates stormed to the Premier League taking the Championship title in the process.

In the final game of the season at Hull, Maynard made a late cameo appearance off the bench and scored from the penalty spot too.

It may not have been much, but he admits it gave him a big lift before the summer break.

“Playing that game at Hull was a boost to me, getting the goal too, it was a nice end to a horrible season,” he said. “I went away happier than I would have without that game under my belt. I’ve had no problems since, the knee is feeling great so, touch wood, that’s the end of my problems. I can just concentrate on scoring goals for City.”

And Maynard can look forward to testing his readiness for the top flight against Spanish giants Real Sociedad, who are on their way to Cardiff City Stadium over the first weekend in August.

The clash the La Liga outfit, preparing for European Championship League football, has not yet been officially confirmed but sources in Spain say it is ‘99 per cent certain to go ahead’.

Mexican international Carlos Vela, a former Arsenal and West Brom forward, and highly-rated central defender Inigo Martinez, are Sociedad’s star players and will be in their squad for the trip to South Wales.

Carls updates have been very off the mark lately. Saying we were going to sign 2 players, that never came to fruition and also claimed we had a bid accepted for Wanyama, which is also not true.

More like Not In The Know.

The sooner people on here understand that the better.

No doubt i'll get stick for this, I question peoples intelligence after reading some of the shit people fall for on here "Carl can't say because he is told not to by the club when he can say he will" Yet he tells people there are 2 signings IN THE BAG (this means contracts signed or they are not "in the bag" ) and that wanyama bid HAS been accepted (obviously living by his "not releasing info till certain" rule...yet all of it appears to be bollocks..

Not saying we wont sign him, but people need to wake up to the fact that NOBODY at the club is giving away info.

Fall for it all you want, more fool you...
