Celtic blast back at Victor Wanyama's Agent

THE relationship between Victor Wanyama and Celtic was breaking down last night in a row between the wantaway Kenyan’s camp and the SPL champions.

Record Sport understands Wanyama’s advisers have infuriated the powers that be inside Parkhead by launching a high-profile campaign to land their man a money-spinning move out of Glasgow.

This comes amid claims down south that Wanyama’s £12.5million move to Southampton collapsed because the 21-year-old’s representatives were demanding a £1m fee.

Yesterday Barcelona-based agent Ivan Modia poured fuel on the fire by saying Wanyama has no interest in discussing a move to St Mary’s – and insisting his client had already lost out when denied the chance to join big-spending QPR last summer.

Modia also said Wanyama has gone two years at Celtic – where Neil Lennon tagged his star at £25m – without a pay rise.

This has outraged chief executive Peter Lawwell who saw a number of improved contract offers over the last 12 months turned down.

Sources close to Lawwell believe Wanyama’s advisers booted out a bumper deal that would have doubled the value of the player’s contract in a bid to force his sale.

In a tersely-worded statement a club spokesman said last night: “These negotiations like any others, are carried out by Celtic in a proper, private and professional manner.

“Celtic carries out its business with integrity, we work to the highest standards and in the interests of the club, our supporters and indeed our players. We do not need to comment any further.”

But privately Celtic are understood to be simmering with anger at the way Wanyama’s agents have gone about their business.

In the meantime the club have kicked a £10m bid from Cardiff into touch in the hope another bidder might match the record-breaking Southampton offer.

But the fear remains any deal might be scuppered by the exorbitant demands of Wanyama’s agents.

Modia appeared to suggest yesterday Wanyama’s own cash demands caused the stumbling block.

He said: “We’re not in talks with Southampton and have not been since their final offer more than two weeks ago.

“The news of the fee being agreed may be coming out now but we see little sense in a fee being agreed if there is no reasonable prospect of the player’s terms being met.

“To suggest we’re talking with Southampton is false, their offer was way below Victor’s expectations. There’s no chance of him signing the deal on offer and both Celtic and Southampton were informed some time ago.

“The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal just because it is good for Celtic.

“Remember he has been with the club for two years now – without a pay rise – and has given them wonderful service since he arrived.

“Added to this is the fact that by Celtic refusing him permission to join QPR last summer, Victor lost more than £1m in potential earnings – yet he kept his mouth shut and continued to be a model professional.”

Wanyama, signed from Belgian side Beerschot in 2011, will hold out for more potential escape routes, knowing his bridges with Celtic have been burned.

Modia added: “We know there’s interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects. He hopes Celtic will adopt a more reasonable approach and take into account the service he’s given the club so far.”

Not sure about this at all.

Are this player and his representatives going to act in a similar manner with us if he does sign?

Obviously the player and his agent would only see us as a stepping stone to a move to a bigger club and we could find ourselves in exactly the same position that Celtic are now in maybe at the end of next season.

Sounds like this player and his entourage could be more trouble than they're worth.

By the way, would Wanyama be missing for the African Cup of Nations evry time it comes around?

His agent will do the same to Cardiff after 1 season.

Kenya would have to qualify for the ACON first which they haven't done for donkeys years so its unlikely he would miss part of the season for that

So his agent wants Celtic to reward a huge 2 years of good service (for which he has been paid handsomely) and then criticises them for not letting the player leave after just 1 year of that service!

You couldn't make it up.

City should stay well clear as the guy, or atleast his advisors, are trouble and it will end in tears.

Not so sure. Celtic are playing games here too. Once this lad gets to the premiership hes got to prove himself
first. Get him on a three year contract, get two seasons out of him and if he turns out to be that good, make a
tidy tidy profit. Depends what the lad thinks if he meets malky

This is getting a concern now but the good thing is the intent that our club are showing and the ambition to bring in young players that could be valuable assets in the future

On the evidence so far I'm starting to think your right.

Agents
No place for them in football.
Tell Victor if his agent wants £1m pay him himself.
