Which android tablet?

Tue Jun 25, 2013 7:53 pm

Can anyone recommend a decent android tablet?
Want something cheaper than an iPad ideally.

I've seen some for £60/70, but I don't know how good they are.

Cheers

I've got an iPad, but I was going to go for a Google Nexus 7.

Prefer Apple though myself

Had an iPad 2 but got a Kindle Fire HD now and much prefer it. More freedom plus I like to read so can get the kindle books from online. If you aren't into reading then go for the Nexus.

i had a samsung tab 2 10.1 back in January! cost £300 (£50 cashback at the time, so £250 really)... the tablet was good and had a good battery, but the apps and everything were awful! android didn't make them so that they were meant for tablets, they were just over-sized phone apps, so looked very poor and didnt work! a lot of apps like amazon weren't available to download so in the end i just gave up on it and sold it

unless android have improved the apps and made tablet versions of them then i'd stay away from them! but i just upgraded to the new htc one (i had the iphone 4s) and its the best phone i've ever had, so fast and battery life is great! but imo i'd just get an ipad if i was to have another tablet!

Thanks all.

Hadn't thought about the apps, just liked the idea of an android as I have an android phone.

the apps on my phone work much better than my iphone ones, but the tablet ones were just awful! so unless android have actually addressed that then an android tablet might be a better option than the ipad as they're cheaper!

Maybe I'll try one out in a shop first then. Don't think I've used an android tablet before.

Don't fancy £300+ for an iPad.

Just bought a kindle Fire HD 8.9.

quality bit of kit, prefer it to the wifes ipad 2. I use it more for downloaded ripped films and internet. Plus now just have my older kindle in bed to read with and use the fire to read in the day with or to take when travelling with work.

Would recommend above the Ipad 2. never used another tablet.

If you have the money, want to be strictly controlled by Apple for security reasons and you want the apps get an iPad.

If you want to spend less, enjoy reading and want semi restrictive control by Amazon then get the Kindle Fire HD. You can root the Fire HD to have full control but its not worth it. The browser is good, the apps are good enough - email is fine - Twitter, Facebook, etc. Prefer it to the iPad to be honest Owain.

If you want to spend around the same amount as the Kindle Fire HD, want more control again and be able to fully alter the file structure and have total control over your device then get the Nexus.

I suggest you go in to a tech shop like PC World and just try them yourself. Ignore all their sales talk bollocks as they'll spin you the line of how the iPad is wonderful etc. just because its the pricier device. I find my Kindle Fire HD far better and enough for what I want. I found the app store on the iPad just bloated with games made by developers looking to cash in as the Angry Birds developers did. Most of the quality apps are cross platform to be fair.

You might not like the carousel on the Kindle Fire HD as its predominantly for books. I dont mind it, I read, I put books from the net on it and its fine for me to do what I want and a good tool for cheat sheets for programming, developing etc. to have alongside me when working.

But yeah try them out and dont fall for the sales crap any shop will try to give you. The iPad is not as wonderful as people like to think especially when you consider the price. I found that out the costly way.

Google Nexus 7 is an absolute beast and a steal at the price.

I would go new. Always a risk with RMA products. When the saving is around £50 better go brand new mate. I know people want to save as much as possible but I would go with new.

I bought a cheap one, £65 I think, from Amazon its an A1CS Rapid 5 and I cant fault it at all, the quality of the screen and build is superb for the price.

You don't need a Kindle to be able to download books on Amazon!

You can download books from the Google Play store on the Google Nexus 7 and it's also very easy to get the same books supplied by Amazon for their Kindles, by downloading them from Amazon as well!

I've got a Nexus 7 which is a superb bit of kit, although I can't say whether it's better than the Kindle Fire HD!

If you are interested in the Nexus 7 though, it may be worth hanging on for a while, as they are due to release a new one with faster & better specs! :ayatollah:

I know you dont but the reading options/controls are superior on the Kindle. The app isn't as good as the built in Kindle offerings although it is probably getting better all the time on other devices. A Kindle is reading first and foremost. I'd say its better than the Nexus for that whereas a Nexus is better if you're a dev and want to do your own custom stuff to your tablet as you have more control on it. Depends what you want but both better than the iPad imo. If you're not a heavy reader then go for the Nexus.

I had a Galaxy Tab 2 7" free with my phone. Its pretty good like - serves a purpose. Also a lot of the apps have been updated to accommodate tablet use now.

To add to the confusion, do I need a 10" tablet or is a 7" big enough?

I've already got a Galaxy S3, so will a 7" tablet be much better?

Depends what you will use it for but I've always had the mindset that if I have a smart phone with a big screen then I'd get the 10" tablet. The 7" are a little too similar for me.
