We can only guess I suppose but it seems a case of 'a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush'
Celtic won't receive a penny of Southampton's money if the Saints can't agree to the players personal terms and although we may have bid £2m less we can match the wage demands and therefore Celtic would get the cash.

The stumbling block for Saints is the £1m payment to his agent.... if they were offered £12m then they would be better off paying the agent themselves on behalf of Saint and banking £11m than accepting your £10m
