' Cardiff City are in the driving seat to land Celtic's Victor Wanyama for £10m '

25th Jun 2013

Bluebirds target Wanyama says his dream is to play in the Premier League as Malky Mackay hunts down his signature

Celtic star Victor Wanyama is a target for Cardiff City

Cardiff City are in the driving seat to land £10m target Victor Wanyama, but the race is hotting up for the Celtic powerhouse.

The Bluebirds are still waiting to hear whether their record-busting offer for the 21-year-old will be accepted by the Parkhead side.

Cardiff have almost matched the offer Southampton made for the Kenyan international which was accepted by the Hoops, although Wanyama could then not agree personal terms with the Saints.

It is believed Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds are ready to push the boat out on their first summer signing and are closer to meeting Wanyama’s wage demands.

But the on-going transfer saga has alerted others to the midfielder’s availability with Liverpool and Newcastle reportedly monitoring the player’s situation.

Wanyama has also been linked with a move to Turkey, but he is believed to be open to a move to the Welsh capital and the chance of plying his trade in the Premier League next season. And he is adamant he is looking for the opportunity to play regular football, something he is guaranteed with the Bluebirds.

“My dream, like any young footballer, is to play in the Premier League and maybe that is the next step for me,” said Wanyama.

“It’s important for me that a club shows ambition and that I can play an important part in those ambitions.

“At my age I want to play as much as I can. I want to play week in, week out.”

Yeah right

stick your house on it, the bookies have this spectacularly wrong.

Cardiff currently 6/1 with Saints 1/2.

I expect everyone to be driving round in Ferraris in a weeks time then..... or of course hes clearly going to Southampton :D

indeed. but that is a sporting event priced up on reputation and would clearly change as the match progresses. for example he wasn't 1/100 two sets down was he.

markets of transfers and next managers are all based on inside info and its the bookies job to get it right as the finances of the business rest on it.

If news broke, which it has, that Cardiff have bid for Wanyama then the odds would naturally tumble, yet they have increased. this is either because the bid was rejected or that Southampton are coming to an agreement with Wanyamas representatives. certainly isn't because your bid was accepted or that you are in the driving seat is it? common sense tells you that much.

So much so he didn't run his contract down and move to the club Wanyama plays for now as soon as his contractual obligation allowed him to :D

Trust me, they've had plenty wrong in the past. Sky bet is famous for it

But he may have been extremely close to signing for you at that moment. All im saying is, someone ALWAYS knows something. If carl (or anyone else claiming to be in the know) genuinely believed you were front runners to sign him then how could anyone resist earning 600% on any money staked? and of course as soon as people start to put money on then the odds would come down.

they have gone from 9/2 to 6/1 so the complete opposite of what you would expect to happen. all the stories are that Southampton aren't in the running due to Wanyamas demands yet they are shortening and shortening.

Carl & Wales online. If you read any of my posts last summer regarding all our forthcoming buys then you'd know I don't speculate

It's better to deal in facts

Odds have come in he's 7/2 to join us now.

Citygent do you think by the first game of season we will actually have the calibre of player we are being linked with in our team?

Bloody exiting if we do :malky:

Well thats very interesting and ill be watching very closely, I have major doubts however. if there is any truth in the rumour and people like Carl and you know who aren't even employed by Cardiff or Celtic then its safe to say that you wont be the only people to know. and if you aren't the only people to know then its safe to say a significant amount of money would have been placed on you through out the night and you should be odds on when the exchanges open in 30 mins, ahead of southampton.

if you are then I will apologise for doubting you.

Well our odds have halved virtually.

Down to 7/2

And the markets only just opened.

Cardiff aren't favourites at 2/1 but the markets have reacted sufficiently for me to apologise to CityGent and Carl. I hold my hands up.

As I said on another thread, if you get him then he is an incredible signing.

After Wanyama shone at Champions League level, Lennon had suggested that the player was worth £25m.

He could definitely be worth the £20m region, hes class and very young. he will develop into one of europes best defensive midfielders.

No need to apologise. I just said don't trust the markets. They rarely have a clue, especially this time of year

I'm not saying he's definitely ours, but we've given ourselves a fighting chance of signing potentially one of the games great midfield players. If we capture him, it'll be a definitive moment for us

I just read on a bbc website that southampton have bid 12m

That's old news.

We are now 6/4
My sneaky £10 bet at 6/1 looks good for now.

All was agreed between the clubs apparently mate, but Wanyama was more impressed with Malky than Cortese it seems.

We are currently 11/8 and shortening all the time,
Southampton have drifted to 10/11

if someone like the unwashed is going to base it purely on the odds now, there is nothing between us really.

Of course its not as simple as that

Agreed. If you get him, you stay up in my opinion. I just expected the markets to react quicker than they did, just couldn't understand why you were still 6/1, the important part however is you are not anymore and people clearly believe you are in with a shout.

Tom Ince is a risk and im not too sure for £8m. Wanyama is a different kettle of fish, top top top class.
