O/T Football Boots

Sun Jun 23, 2013 8:38 pm

I've always had boots with studs on the bottom, but loads of people use blades now instead. Can anyone on here tell me the difference in the two? What are blades like on hard ground?

Depends what you are talking about. You have metal studs which are usually SG (Soft Ground) then have FG (Firm Ground).

Never liked blades and they tend to cause more injuries

I've always had the metal studs. I'd imagine they're better for soft, boggy conditions? Most people have those plastic blades now though. My guess is they don't dig into the hard ground in the winter though?

Most people opt for Plastic Blades as it can be used for most surfaces like Astroturf aswell as 3G and playing Football.

general rule i've found is metal studs for SG and blades for FG. I've always stuck to that and had no issues :)

I use plastic blades on all sorts of ground.

Work fantastically on soft, boggy mud and work great on firm ground.

What are they like on frosty pitches in the middle of February? Don't really want to go breaking my ankle. Is it worth keeping my metal studs for times like those?

It depends on the boot as I've noticed that some FG boots have shorter blades. The CTRs by Nike are great.
I didn't get to play much in February due to matches being called off, but they were fine in training.

I'd keep ah old of your metal studs if you're in doubt but plastic moulds work great on firm or soft ground.

The difference depends on how good you are really;

a) If you play lower league, say Cardiff & District Division 5. Then prepare to get the piss taken out of you regularly.

b) Higher levels not so much, unless you buy a loud colour, then see 'a'.
