Expanding my work.
As Some of you may or not know,I drive coaches for a living (lots of tours but mainly Megabus and Citylink work).
But one of my former managers who has moved on has offered me a job.he is looking to build a new team of drivers and wants people who are reliable and trustworthy (which was nice to hear)
Currently I stay in Musselburgh and work is based in Edinburgh with the occasional stop off in London or Aberdeen.
But In the past Hour I have been offered a chance to do the Megabus Continental. So I would head to London, take a coach to Paris-Brussels-Genk-The Dam etc etc be away 4/5 days out of the 7.Money is about double my current weekly salary.
Or just do the London-Plymouth-Cardiff-Birmingham-Glasgow-Edinburgh runs.
At a similar pay to what currently on.
Both Jobs would have me away from my Family for the best part of the weeks and months, And my little girl is only 2.
Any guys on here that have had or currently involved in situations similar with working away from a young family with any advice, would be welcomed.
Have spoken with my wife briefly and she seemed reluctant but I know she would support and stand by any decision that I made.

Ask them if you can do halves, do continental for 2 weeks then home 2 weeks or something similar

my wife didnt join me out in k town for a year. due to having to do a 12 month work notice with her job and my job in nato was to good to turn down in terms of places to live and salary for us as a family.
its hard, but with wifi when you travel you will always have access to skype. just take a tablet/laptop with you when you travel. If you give it a year, it will be like working 2 years for you if you said your salary doubled, just bear that in mind. If in a year it doesnt work out, then look for the shorter routes. But you will be seeing your family each week, i had to make do with a couple of nights every 2/3 weeks.
take the job, and try it. you can always look for something else if it doesnt work. but you cant take the job again. just make sure its talked through massively with the wife first.

You can never get the time back with family, but if you need the money more go for it.When you get older and family is grown up you realise that time is more precious than money.I used to work many hours years ago in steel works the money was great but i missed so much of my boys growing up.Good luck in whatever your decision is, hope your good lady understands why you do it.

weigh up how much you will be away on both jobs and if they are similar amount take the better paying job but remember family comes first whatever you decide

horses for courses mate, some can work away from family, others cannot. I tried it and feckin hated it.
worth a try chatting to your boss as you seem to get on with him, try it for say 2 months and see how it is for you AND your family.
Good luck

What i earn away in one week would take a month to earn back home in a normal factory job, yes i have small kids but home on weekends thats the hardest part but i aint getting out of bed for £200 a week like some in factorys back home slogging there guts from 8 till 5 while working to a beeper for breaks as that aint for me, if you want nice things in life for your family got to go get them as it dont come to you on the other hand i miss my boys but such is life

In an intresting development tonight I have taken a phone call from my current boss who has caught wind of certain offers that have been made.
He Has asked me to come and have a chat with him before I make any decisions on my future.
I have made my decision that the offer (Continental work) is a unique one but the timing is not.
I am only 32 and many years left to serve. Financially it would be a huge boost, but I am earning well at the moment.
No ammount of money will allow me to buy certain moments that I would be missing.
Chloe starts Nursery next year and in the coming years I will have more time to give to my career.
Thanks for all your input guys,Every word has been notes and valued.
I will listen to what my gaffer says tomorrow (Who knows what he may offer, if that is the reason for the chat).
Will keep you posted,Again Thank You All

Money is great and can help your family in the future.
But you will miss the best time of your daughters life. I know as I was in the same situation. I gave up the money and came home. No regrets, apart from the bits of my children's lives I had missed.
Stay home and enjoy the time with your young family.

A friend of mine has just taken a pay cut of roughly £300 a week so he can take his boy to school every morning and have weekends free, but works a bit later in the evenings. He is not living with his son and since taking the pay cut is less stressed and is enjoying life more, and as he works less his ex appreciates the help that means she can go out and work now too ith the extra help in the mornings.
As has been said above, time with your kids is priceless. I see mine on the weekends, so cant go to football, but i know what i'd rather.
