Malky finding it hard to attract quality players.

The Scot concedes it is proving difficult to attract players to a club touted as relegation favourites next season, but insists he is determined to bolster his options

Malky Mackay admits Cardiff are having to fight in order to convince top-flight quality players to join the club this summer.

The Bluebirds are gearing up for their first ever Premier League campaign, but are yet to make a single addition to the squad which won the Championship last season.

And Mackay has revealed the club are finding it difficult to convince player to join a club regarded by many as favourites for relegation, but insists he remains determined to bolster his options.

"It's [about] convincing some players to come to a club who are seen as one of the relegation favourites," he told BBC Sport.

"But I talk to them about the plan we have here going forward and the way that we're going to play and the whole package that involves everything about Cardiff City, which I think is quite exciting."

"The recruitment team are in their busiest time of the year at the moment in between [transfer] windows.

"There's an awful lot of work gone on behind the scenes in terms of going to watch players, reports coming in, speaking to agents and football clubs to make sure we bring the correct quality of player that's going to help the group.

"The quality of the player again has to go up because we're going into an even better league.

"[When] bringing players to the football club [we] try and make sure we investigate them well enough that we don't make too many mistakes and they come in and be successful over a period of time."

Mackay also believes that, regardless of the signings he manages to make this summer, Cardiff will face a real fight to stay in the Premier League next season.

"We're in one of the toughest leagues in the world and it's where we want to be," he added.

"We had an awful lot of success last season and an awful lot of good days.

"But we also fully understand the difference this season is going to be. It's something I'm going to be very open with the fans [about] in terms of the backing they are going to have to give us at certain times of the season.

"It is going to be difficult. This season we're going to be playing against some real top teams and it's something that we've got to look at over the whole season.

"It's over the whole season that we make sure we survive and stay in this division."

what a damaging article that could be. malky did not say he was STRUGGLING it was just an overview of plain facts of course we are one of the favourites to go back down but all he says is that he has to sell the club and his ideas to players. no different than selling a Championship Club to a Premiership player. we arent after Tevex or Rooney FFS!

We're not the only ones, Palace haven't added and nor have any of the teams that finished directly above the drop either. Hull have signed one or two but nobody that I wish we had signed.

It will come, keep the faith :ayatollah:

Hardly surprising to be honest. I still think we only need a few additions. Norwich survived and that was a mostly Championship team. I see no issue with us as we have 2 strikers coming back who can score. A few extra players will be enough.

I really hope the Kuyt deal gets done :D as he'd be perfect to play with either of them and just slip clever balls through to them to run onto the end of. i.e. the Bergkamp to Henry. Obviously no where near that level but that kind of style.

It's a problem for lots clubs, every player dreams of man u, chelski, ect ect but in reality only the cream get there! Eventually players realise this and settle for the best of the rest. Particularly in premier.

agree

A shite piece of work -

Malky and CCFC are new fish here, unknowns.
It will be hard to attract superstar players although I take solice from what southampton, norwich, jacks etc have done.

They have enabled players an opportunity, with some going on to international caps or being courted by champions league clubs.

There will be plenty of fish to choose from, we just need the ones who can light the way in our first season.
(no mean feat - although Malky hasnt done too bad to date with players as he ;) )

As soon as we manage to make that first signing, then others will follow, especially if its a decent first signing. Players are bound to be apprehensive about joining us... Unless we are prepared to pay the kind of wages Qpr did last season, which I hope we don't.

We could easily attract good technical players with the lure of stupid money, however Malky wants to run the club right and he wants a united dressing room free of Jay Bothroyd's.

I'm behind him 100&%. :ayatollah:

First thing I thought reading that article was "shit this is not going to help matters when players read this". But like another poster just said once we get one decent player to commit to the club it will be easier to start to convince others

Keep the faith in Malky we trust :malky: :malky: :malky: :malky:

If we haven't signed a quality player by this time next week, alarms bells are ringing

I agree. Its a fine balancing act between attracting quality players, & negotiating a reasonable & affordable contract,,,not just for this new season, but for other seasons to come, regardless of what division were in.

You have to remember Bellamy has been involved with helping so hopefully Bellamy can help and explain the advantages and positives of playing under MM.

An interesting point, & relevant too. I'm sure that in the "jungle" of professional football, networking & edification is just as active & important as any other business.
