Stephen McPhail

Mon Jun 17, 2013 8:36 pm

Oreyt lads, strong rumours down this end that Stephen McPhail is going to be joining us soon.

Just wanted to get your opinions on him? The general consensus amongst Wednesdayites is that it would be a very uninspiring signing. We already have a lot of central midfielders at the club, so I don't really see the point in bringing him in. Also he's getting on a bit now, not really done much for a few years now, surely his best days are behind him and cannot see how he would improve us.

Hope it's not a case of Jonesy helping out an old friend.

Mirror what you say, his best days are behind him, we've always had room for sentiment for him, hasn't played properly for a long time due to health problems. Looked extremely poor in our FA Cup match vs Macclesfield

Brilliant at holding the game up /slowing it down
Great passer of the ball
Dodgy in big games as his tackling is not the best and tends to miss time them a lot
Great little player at championship level will be a good signing for you if fit
Doubt he's got a full season in him maybe 20/25 games
Allways gives 100%

Probably a squad player in all honesty

Personally, I think that Steve McPhail was a very decent player at Championship level. In recent years though, he has been troubled by illness. He had cancer, had chemotherapy, and thankfully seems to be OK now. But then there was another illness. Can't remember it's name, but, apparently, meant that he could not produce any saliva. He has only played a couple of games in tha past three seasons. Steve is a top bloke, but, sadly, it's difficult to see where his career goes from here. But I wish him and his family well :ayatollah:

Least of your problems if jonesy bumps into fowler in Florida this summer. Does all his scouting in the magic kingdom

not sure given his condition if he can stay fit for the regualar demands in league one given his condition,
I think he would contribute in your side I dont think he would improve your team though,

think of it as bringing in a player to do someones job, not to improve the squad

One of the best passers of the ball I have ever seen play for City.

Glad to see the back of him, most one footed player I've ever seen, I can tell you now how many goals he'll score for you, none, throw in the fact he can't tackle and can only pass the ball sideways, I almost feel sorry for you.

I adore Stephen McPhail, sits in middle and spreads the play very well. Not likely to get you many goals, but that's not his role. At 33 you could get a couple of seasons out of him. On a free, think it'd be a good signing.

Dont think hes capable of playing a full 90 minutes at championship level anymore unfortuntaely
top pro and a nice guy and I truly wish him well

I honestly don't think he's the player for the Owls right now.

If he's fit on his day he's a great player. A great passing ability and his attitude is top notch. I doubt he will play much for you because of his health problems.

Your home game against Bristol City you would have won with McPhail.

He will be an impact players in the midfield were he does his best work by killing the game which will be useful if you have the lead like you did against the Worzils.

He will stop any forward momentum in your team Only passes sideways or backwards to the full backs to quickly hack clear.
Will not score, unless he is with you for 5/6 years.
Cannot tackle as he has to spin around to use his left leg - not sure if the right one works or is merely there for balance.
Therefore his tackles are clumsy and misses a lot of them.

he will look good in your team as he will be the only one who will look like he can pass on the floor, but is in fact just flattering to deceive as they say.

Fitness levels are very poor - maybe 10 mins per game last couple of years (due to illnesses).

Typical Dave Moans signing - played for him before, old and injury prone. But he will look good in training.

A great player on his day although those days will be a lot less common following his illness. The sort of player who people won't appreciate due to him slowing the game down, but when he's missing the job he does so well is more obvious.

I wish Mcphail all the luck in the world, as a man, I can't speak highly enough of him, a true professional, however, I thought he might retire, and go into coaching,I'm afraid it's jobs for the boys with Jones again.

His health and age would be a concern, he hasnt played a lot of competitive games in recent seasons.

Ability wise he is a cracking player to have, keeps the ball well, passes well, may not be spectacular passes all the time but i bet he would touch the ball more than any other player, always makes himself available for a pass and uses the ball well. He keeps things ticking in midfield and keeps the ball moving.

Mate he is totally shit and held us back for years.

However, Dave Jones loves him so while he is your manager SM will probably play every week when fit.
