Hull now looking at D.Bent - (can't see this one happening)
Premier League new boys Hull City have revealed their interest in Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, according to The Mirror.
The Tigers manager Steve Bruce signed Bent for Sunderland in 2009 and now wants him again to boost the club’s hopes of staying in England’s top division, the newspaper claims.
Villa signed him from the Black Cats for £24million back in January 2011 but now want just a quarter of that price to get him off their books.
Under Paul Lambert, the 29-year-old has found appearances hard to come by such has been the form of Christian Benteke, playing just 16 league games this season.
Price
Newcastle United looked favourites to sign him but are not willing to meet the £6million asking price with the striker’s £70,000 a week wages also a problem for the Toon Army.
Bent’s salary is also a difficulty for Hull, but Bruce is reportedly hoping that he will be willing to take a pay cut.
However, a source insisted to the newspaper: “Hull certainly wouldn’t baulk at meeting Villa’s asking price for Darren.
“When Steve Bruce was appointed Sunderland manager four years ago, he made Bent his first signing and he rates him very highly.
“Steve was bitterly disappointed when Darren decided to leave Wearside for Villa because he really felt the club and player were perfect for each other and could go places together.
“Hull know they need to boost their fire-power going into the top flight, and Brucey would love to bring Darren to Humberside.”
The 52-year-old’s other targets to improve the Tigers’ goal-shy attack include Celtic’s Gary Hooper, Arouna Kone of Wigan Athletic and Burnley striker Charlie Austin, according to the newspaper.
