" Cardiff City fans' group has 'massive base' to build from to restore blue club colours "

17th Jun 2013

Bluebirds columnist Carl Curtis says he is impressed with the commitment of Bluebirds Unite, which has the support of more than 600 fans

A Cardiff City fans’ group has a “massive base” to build from as it looks to restore the club’s original colours of blue, according to Echo Bluebirds columnist Carl Curtis.

He attended the first formal meeting of Bluebirds Unite to see what the group – formed back in March – was about, as well as its aims and agenda.

And he said that, after not knowing what to expect, he was impressed with the commitment of the group which had a turnout of more than 600 fans.

Last Tuesday’s meeting came after a previous march through the city centre on a Bank Holiday on May 26.

Mr Curtis said: “I didn’t think it was a get together as a group and didn’t think it was the right thing for me.

“But looking at the success of Blue Sunday, as it has become known, I thought it interested me. When they had announced the meeting, I thought: ‘Well, I will go along’.

“What I liked about Bluebirds Unite was they are concentrating on trying to restore our blue and the bluebird and trying to keep that tradition.”

Mr Curtis said, while red was the club’s chosen colour for the time being since the well-documented rebrand last summer, the group could play an important role in preserving blue for younger generations.

“Even if other organisations, The Supporters’ Trust, Supporters’ Club, Fans’ Groups and message boards don’t return to blue in the near future, it’s about keeping the blue for younger kids coming up and if we don’t stand up and keep the blue, it’s gong to go red in a matter of double-quick time,” he said.

“I like the idea of keeping the blue and asking fans if they like blue and want to keep a tradition that has been there since 1908.”

Meanwhile Mr Curtis said he was glad there was no anti-Vincent Tan sentiment, with fans grateful for the Malaysian benefactor’s support but solely concerned over the issue of the club’s colour and the bluebird.

“It wasn’t a ‘get out Tan’ or ‘let’s get rid of Tan’ group like previous groups have tried to do,” he said.

“They are welcoming Vincent Tan and obviously welcoming his investment. They just don’t like what he’s done with the colour change.”

He added: “From that point of view the base they have now got to work from is massive. They have got a solid foundation to work from and think from that meeting will get bigger again.

“I also like the idea it won’t just be Cardiff-based and they will go to Caerphilly, Port Talbot and take it round so people can be part of it.”

One person brought in a small flag with "against modern football" on it, it doesn't represent the whole group, it's just unfortunate that it made it into the photo

Baz, your old news on that its been explained 50 times, one person out of 600 plus brought a small flag in to the photo and no one had noticed till it was to late, the girl has apologised, that was just her own personal view. Sian has already made a publicly statement saying this is not what Bluebirds Unite is about.
Its like say you on the Canton stand with one flag saying Tan out, does that mean the Canton stand are all saying it?

1 in a few thousand, 1 in 20, big difference. People will always pick holes in to as what the flag was doing in the picture, good luck to the BU I hope they have luck in bringing the Blue kit back :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I am not picking holes just that every time a picture come out it seems to have that in it all the time there were banners at the march and they all made the papers

But if there was a tan out flag in the canton then the papers would make out all the fans want him out, as in all the red scarves tan would have thought all the fans at the Brighton game were for the rebrand

Little things go a long way in other peoples thoughts

This is why the group must be tight and have a collective goal. It has to be just the one simple manifesto and that is the return of the blue home shirt.

It undermines all the good work when committee members are also calling for VT to leave the club. People will then find it easy to pick holes in the Bluebirds Unite cause even though its just one persons opinion.

I agree to a point about the petition but the fact is 600 people got off their backsides to actually show their support and everyone of the 600 were wearing Blue and I believe that future meetings will generate more numbers.

Had I used the figure of 6,000 for the petition then I think the group could have come in for criticism possibly because fans of other clubs and friends signed it and are unlikely to ever support the cause in person.

Hope I have explained it correctly.

This group will go from strength to strength and I know they will attract a lot of the neutrals if they keep to what is being preached myself included

I have sat on the fence from the beginning and its supporters like myself that has to be convinced

Same here Bluebirds Unite have a lot of convincing to do before the middle ground fan begins to trust them.

That won't happen if they use a petition of 6000 signed in good faith as an excuse to hold a march at a 'high' profile home game. Many fans (including me) signed the petition because we would like 'one day' to see a return to blue, we didn't sign it because we wanted to see a march against Vincent Tan for a change now.

It doesn't matter how well intentioned the march may be it will be perceived as an 'anti-Tan', because the only way to get blue back ATM is to remove Tan.

That is how he will seen it no matter how much BU may protest differently.

If BU want to hold a march then put up another petition and see if 6000 support it.
