Aron Gunnarsson hands Cardiff City Premier League fitness boost
The 24-year-old suffered a shoulder injury last week while captaining Iceland in a World Cup qualifier but will be ready for Premier League kick off.
Cardiff City look set to be handed a boost with midfielder Aron Gunnarsson likely to be fit for the start of the Premier League campaign.
The 24-year-old suffered a shoulder injury last week while captaining Iceland in a World Cup qualifier. Gunnarsson was forced off by the problem in the 53rd minute as the Icelanders crashed 4-2 to Slovenia. He had an X-ray following the game and has undergone various tests and boss Malky Mackay is hopeful his player will be ready for the new season which kicks off on August 17.
“We think at this point Aron will be OK for the start of the season,” said Mackay. “But things are on-going at the moment and we should have a much clearer picture next week.”
Gunnarsson was one of Mackay’s most consistent performers last term as the Bluebirds took the second tier by storm. The tenacious midfielder, famous for his long-throws, made 45 appearances and finished City’s joint-second highest scorer with eight goals.
Preparations are underway for Cardiff’s historic season with the Bluebirds’ recruitment department working flat out on pinning down new signings.
But reports linking Mackay with a move for Brighton midfielder Liam Bridcutt and veteran defender Joseph Yobo at Fenerbahce are wide of the mark, WalesOnline understands.
Gunnarsson himself has also moved to allay fears that his side might go into its first top flight campaign in 50 years without one of the stars of the Championship-winning season. The Icelander tweeted: “Thanks for all the messages folks, I am okay and will be alright!”

With the amount of panzys in the Prem I bet he will give away a lot of fouls but it's player like his drive and hunger you need in the midfield in the Premier League.
