He's a decent player but is he better than gunnarsson , mutch , kimbo or whittingham who will all be aiming for the midfield positions ?
Personally I'd say no I agree we need better if we want to stay up

No. He will be in decline now as Mutch and so on grow and get better. Would be wasting money IMO.

He's basically the Don Cowie but in the Premiership for me.

I think players like Cowie will go now and be replaced by players like O'Neill. It's gradual progression. Cowie did in a job in the Championship and O'Neil would do the same job but in the Premier League.

I get it that our fans want to have these great players coming in but we still need to "Mr Dependable" players too that come in and do a job, just like Cowie did v Sheffield Wednesday towards the end of the season and Rudy did v Leicester...Millwall etc.

Squad players are going to be important next season and although O'Neill isn't a superstar, i'd rather him in the squad than Cowie or Kiss and that's no slight on them, O'Neill is just better.

Why are we after players on the downward slope, if he was in his prime fair enough, seems to me we're after a buch of journeymen/has beens.

Definatley not for me although there's a pol on WOL with something like a 87% swing for O'Niell which amazes me.
If Whitts was let off the leash more he would be a better player & a better playmaker IMO.

Cowie, one of the fittest players in the country. Need his energy and drive in the middle of the park breaking down the oppositions attacks every time. Keep him. need someone to do the hard graft. :old:

Gary O'Neil has declared that an agreement is in place with West Ham United over a new contract, which he expects to sign on Monday morning.

The 30-year-old was officially released by West Ham at the end of last season, just over two years after completing a £5m move from Middlesbrough.

O'Neil has insisted that he was always confident of agreeing fresh terms with Hammers boss Sam Allardyce, despite a delay in proceedings while the midfielder was a free agent during the close season.

He told Sky Sports News: "Everything's been agreed. I didn't need a medical, obviously they know me quite well.

"All the terms are agreed and everyone's happy, so I'll just sign Monday morning. It took a little while. With everyone being on holiday stuff drags out, but we got there in the end."

"That's the way it comes out in the press [on being released], slightly differently to how it is. We were always sorting it out and I was confident I would end up there."

During West Ham's successful return to the Premier League last season O'Neil featured largely as a substitute, making 27 appearances in all competitions.
