The start of Cardiff City star Aron Gunnarson's first Premier League season is in doubt after he suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder playing for Iceland.

Icelandic captain Gunnarsson faced Slovenia in a crunch World Cup qualifier in Reykjavik on Friday night and had a torrid time as he conceded a penalty and got carried off during a 4-2 defeat.

The 24-year-old was injured after a heavy fall at the Laugardalsvöllur national stadium early in the second half.

The midfield maestro, famous for his mighty throws, lay on the pitch for a considerable time before being rushed to hospital.

He was replaced on the pitch by former Chelsea star Eidur Gudjohnson in the 52nd minute.

Iceland coach Lars Lagerback, once linked with the Wales job, confirmed that the former Coventry City star was suffered a nasty shoulder injury before wishing his captain a speedy recovery and blaming the injury for his team's devastating defeat.

The 64-year-old Swede sAron has a shoulder injury but the national team doctor are unsure how serious the injury was.

“He had an X-ray in hospital which should reveal how serious the injury is.

“For us, it had a big impact on the course of the game.

“We were level at 2-2 before our captain went off.

“We were unlucky that Aron injured himself because the balance of the game changed when he went off.”

But prior to the injury, Gunnarsson was the villain as he was guilty of surrendering his team's 2-1 lead by fouling Slovenia's Milivoje Novakovic in the box on the half hour.

Valter Birsa slotted the penalty for the group's bottom placed team to make the score 2-2, laying the foundation for the shock win in the second half.

If Gunnarsson's injury is a dislocated shoulder, it is expected to take between 12 and 16 weeks to fully heal, which would see him struggling to make the start of the Premier League season in August.

Lagerback continued: “Hopefully Aron will recover soon as he will go on holiday now and has a few weeks to recover before the Premier League season starts.”

He should be fit for preseason but if he done ligament damage it tends to pop out more easily next time and in the end sugery is required.

Hopefully he will be OK for pre-season. If it means no long throws for a while, then so be it. Main thing is that he can play :ayatollah:
