Swansea to eclipse Cardiff in battle of Wales?

Sat Jun 08, 2013 8:51 pm

Ladbrokes: Mackay's squad lacking the offensive options needed to challenge Swans.

Michael Laudrup enjoyed a hugely successful maiden season as Swansea manager, fitting seamlessly into – and improving upon – the tactical setup laid out during the Swans’ inaugural season in the Premier League.

The Dane delivered the Capital One Cup in February in what effectively amounted to an end of season party, after their impressive league form had steered them well clear of the relegation picture. They eventually finished in ninth position, a full 10 points clear of the drop.

Summer signing Michu was the primary source of goals in south west Wales last term, and after a return of 18 league goals it will come as a relief to those at the Liberty Stadium that the Spaniard has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2016.

Defensive midfielder Jose Canas has already been added to the Swansea roster this summer after helping guide Real Betis to seventh place in the Primera Liga, suggesting that the club is not content to rest on its laurels and is showing an earnest ambition to ascend the table next year.

After numerous botched efforts Cardiff finally gained promotion to the top flight in 2012-13, Malky Mackay implementing a robust line-up that will need noteworthy additions.

It is worth mentioning that none of the promoted sides this term finished higher than 14th. Birmingham were the last promoted side to finish in the top 10 in 2009-10, a feat that becomes harder with every passing season with the money being spent across the division.

With 72 league goals in 46 games last season – just six more than relegated Peterborough – they are by no means prolific, and will obviously find the going far harder against the Premier League’s less forgiving defences.

The Bluebirds’ top scorer last term was Heidar Helguson, registering just nine strikes. The veteran Icelandic striker has since returned to his homeland, increasing what was already a notable void in the goal-threatening options.

At this moment in time Swansea look all set to top the intra-Welsh battle, and can be backed to do so at 1/3, with Cardiff an 11/5 shot to cause an improbable upset.

Did they not post something in Feb or early March saying we would bottle it again?

And the transfer window doesn't close until September 2

I love the comparison to Peterborough in terms of goals. They don't mention that only Watford and Palace scored more than us, and palace only scored 1 more! And surely it's better for goals to come from many players in a team as opposed to rely heavily on one?

Clearly written by someone who doesn't like us. Could be a long list of suspects :D :ayatollah:

We'll do a Stoke job next season and stay up. :malky:

We finished with more points the previous season without michu and Laudrup. So dont understand your logic. Especially if they go we will have a fortune to spend.

No the striker we bought preseason, his name is Nicky Maynard. When you come onto another teams message board atleast try to know what you are talking about..... tool  Just for your information we bought Campbell in January, hardly qualifies for almost the entire season. :laughing6:

I don't remember Swansea have any striker of real note, so I don't really see your point?

(Don't forget, you Jacks love to tell us how Michu isn't a striker, so I didn't include him..)

How many goals did maynard score for you last season, i know he was injured but dont think he's up to it why did west ham let him go. I would say if cardiff dont make at least 8 good signings then your down, not because im a swans fan just do not rate many of your players.

Why did West Ham let him go? They brought in Andy Carroll. Just because a club sells a player, doesn't mean they aren't good enough...

You bought Michu for £2m - why did his previous club let him go? - see my point?

Well that you for your opinions, but I recall many saying the same about yourselves only 2 years ago... Short memory? Or weren't you a fan then?

Know a lot about Cardiff players do you?
As for how many goals did Maynard score, he was injured in his 3rd game and made a scoring return last game of the season. Striker wise we are stronger than you when you came up and probably now for that matter.

Carroll is a different type of player, michu was sold because his old club needed the cash, when Swansea went up we signed ,vorm, caulker, graham, all who had good seasons, the rest like britton, taylor were more suited to pl football than championship football because of the way swansea play. Let me ask you what type of football do cardiff play, do you play like stoke or like swansea, or some other team i maybe wrong cardiff may have a good season but cant see it myself unless you sign 8 good players.

Re: Swansea to eclipse Cardiff in battle of Wales?

Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:23 pm

West Ham also needed the money for Carroll.. So thanks for proving yourself wrong.

"More suited to the prem" knew that before then, did you? No.. Nobody did. It could easily happen again.

We don't play like either club that you mentioned.

I love how you don't know much about how CCFC play, but claim to have enough knowledge about how our players aren't good enough (before we even sign anyone!)

Swansea only play with one striker since the days of jason scotland, when we went up sinclair scored something like 28 goals and he's not a striker, same with michu over 20 goals last season and hes not a striker, so your probably right your strikers may well be better than swansea's.

West ham needed the money, didnt they only pay liverpool 1 million to take him on loan. And yes i was saying even before swansea kicked off in the pl that players like britton would be more suited to playing teams like villa, fulham etc, than, scunny, sheff utd p'boro. And i said the players you have now will struggle, if or when you sign new players i may change my mind.
