Anyone play guitar

Mon Jun 03, 2013 4:15 pm

Always wanted to learn , just wondering if the lessons on youtube to teach yourself work or is it better to go through tutor ?
Also any tips on guitar to go for for a beginner ?

It's solid and takes hundreds of hours practice!

The way I started was by using tabs to play easy songs by the likes of blink-182, greenday, nirvana ect.

It teaches you how to move around a guitar, and gives you a lot of confidence in your ability to learn.

Then move on to learning chords and reading the music itself.

Its how I learned anyway, I found it the best way.

Youtube came out twenty odd years after I started but I think it's a great free way to learn, lessons of all standards so you can move at whatever pace suits.

Well I had lessons since I was a kid, I do classical stuff (boring) but it really teaches you everything you need to know. Practice is the main thing though. As you're a beginner I'd say start off with basic chords, there's loads of stuff on youtube to help you. :ayatollah:

Quite a few I think. I've played on and off for around 30 years and everything above is sound advice. I strongly recommend having at least four or five lessons to start you off as its important to learn the very basics such as how to hold a guitar properly, hand positions, etc. Otherwise it takes years to get rid of the "bad habits", I still can't hold a guitar properly  as I started off without any advice at all.

As james says TABS are the easiest way to learn and the thousands of them on the internet but don't pay always go for the free ones and if you like a tune look at the various TABS as there can be quite a difference, a lot of the people that put them play by ear so interpretation can vary a lot. Simple tunes like Paranoid for example, most guitar players play it high up the neck in standard tuning but Tony drop tunes the guitar as he lost the tops of his fingers!! So for the authentic as it was done tune you'll need to do the same

Where I do disagree with James is on the chord, scales, music side of things. Many years ago when I was quite good at lead guitar was jamming with some friends of friends and came up with a really good riff. Can you play that in A I was asked....Cue a look of total bemusement from my goodself, what the f**k is A I ask, needless to say I wasn't asked back

So whilst boring, learn scales, chord structure, looks complicated but it isn't it's very simple but to kill the boredom part listen to Blues and hear the guys that make the guitar sing then try to work out in yer head what key they playing, which scales are they using and why can they do it better than you. Practise, practise, practise and then practise again. There's a great line in Bryan Adams' song Summer of Sixty Nine (oo err missus)

"I got my first real six string
Bought at the five and dime
Played it till my fingers bled"

It will hurt when you first start and you'll have hours and hours where nothing seems to work, your fingers won't go where your brain is telling them go but it will come together eventually. I'd also recommend the "play along sites" will take a while but they play songs with lead, rythym, bass guitar or drums removed so you play the sections removed but my main advice is to find some like minded people who you can play together with. At the end of the day there's no better feeling than standing in front of a Marshall stack and hitting the solos be it in a local pub with yer mates or in front of errmm lots of people

There's a guy on Mike Morris' site, if he still posts there, can't remember his name Heath something (I think) that's well into the local Cardiff music scene and helped a few lads over the years learning guitar so maybe worth putting up over there. Beware of Splott Adolf though, he's a loon of the highest order.

Oh. I very very strongly advise you buy the entire collection of Total Guitar magazine, the greatest resource money can buy. I happen to have said collection but it's in London...

Dont bother with tutor they're expensive and only offer little more help then you can find on the internet.

I started off by learning basic stuff and then going into the theory by downloading ebooks personally i thinks that the best way to go

A good tutor will teach the very basics, how to hold your instrument properly and where your left hand should be to balance the guitar and access all the guitar. One or two sessions should cover that. Then yes, the internet has everything and anything, some great websites all for free. I'll fire up my old laptop one of these days and put some of the links up, some great sites with guys who do it to keep music live, none of this sign up with credit card shite, totally free or it was the last time but that laptop, if I've still got it hasn't been used for a good few years.

I'd recommend learning the basic chords first then have a go at playing songs you like from stereophonics, muse, ect... I had a tutor and was learning songs i had never heard before, i then stopped going to lessons and learnt songs that actually interested me online. It engages you so much more when you're playing a song you like.

Best of luck :) :ayatollah: :malky:

Learn on a acoustic guitar - harder to play, but better long term if you get to electric.

Avoid bowl shape guitars, buy solid top only.

Learn the notes by the fret dots, E string G A B etc, A string C D E and so on.

Then practice ya teets off............simple stuff to start.

Try Thomann, better deals than the shops.
