Having supported Cardiff City for over 50 years I am thankful for Mr Tan's investment in the playing squad which has resulted in promotion to the PL. However his tenure at the helm is increasingly alienating the Club's bedrock S Wales' fan base in the orientalisation of City.
The divisive rebranding of last summer followed by the giveaway red scarves late last season together with the awful kit earmarked for next season is sadly turning my Club into one I am increasingly finding difficult to identify with. Moreover we are becoming a laughing stock amongst the football community in Britain. Ditching our century-old traditional BLUE kit and the BLUEbird, now featured as a small afterthought on the dragon-badge, is clearly telling fans that the Club's history means nothing to him. Despite attempted reassurances, that this is not the case, Mr Tan's actions speak far louder than words. The belated vote on the colour of shorts (anything but blue, of course) this month is the latest case of the fans' views counting for absolutely nothing. If our views counted we would still be wearing our traditional kit and badge.
We were told that this summer there would be some sort of consultation process but that has not materialised. It is evident that Mr Tan is aloof from the Club's fans and his credo is, "My way or no way." However City is no third-world entity and best results are achieved when fans feel part of what is happening.
The two last kits to be unveiled, last summer and this, have met with universal derision. His insistence on calling fans, "customers," (and customers, no less that he doesn't mind if he loses 25% of as he pushes through his new vision) is dismissive of those for whom City had been a way of life for so long. In my case I am one of the few City fans to have seen us in the top flight 51 years ago. Yet my voice is of no import in Mr Tan's City.
At the risk of stating the obvious: we are Cardiff City FC, represent the city of Cardiff not Wales, play in BLUE not red, are called the BLUEbirds and should be playing in BLUE with the BLUEbird crest.
The Club's fanbase is now alienated and riven with factions, being more divided than at any time I can ever remember. Intimidation has been so evident this last year yet the Club still fetes those responsible. Clearly much work needs to be done to reconcile fans with the Club and fans with fans.
As a Shareholder, I find that specially invited, "super-fans," get to hear what's happening before we have to look on message boards for that information. This certainly is wrong.
Where does the Club go in the future to bring healing? At the outset, the Club returning to its traditional BLUE kit and BLUEbird Club crest is a must. I await Mr Tan's response.
Yours,
StT.
