Swansea miss out on #1 target

Swansea City may be forced to switch their transfer focus after one of their prime summer targets has sealed a move to Liverpool.

Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, who has been on Swansea’s radar since before the January transfer window, will link up with former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

Liverpool are believed to have splashed out around £7.7m in order to get the deal pushed through before the weekend – after which it could have become far more complicated.

Celta currently have other things on their mind, not least their survival in La Liga.

They play Espanyol this weekend needing to win, while hoping that Deportivo La Coruña don’t, in order to survive in the Primera Division.

Relegation for the Vigo club would have see Aspas’ release clause dip to just below £6m with the lower price allowing Valencia and a host of other clubs to move back in for the player – a scenario that the Reds were keen to avoid.

But Swans boss Michael Laudrup will now have to look elsewhere to boost his firepower up front – an area that he has insisted is key if Swansea are to compete on both Premier League and Europa League fronts next season.

The Aspas news will be something of a worry to Swansea fans coming on the back of increasing speculation that Arsenal are ready to move in for Wales skipper Ashley Williams and rumours of ‘showdown talks’ between Laudrup and the board of directors.

Laudrup’s agent Bayram Tutumulu insisted this week that the Dane would reject any overtures from other clubs this summer providing Swansea are prepared to spend what he feels is needed to be competitive next season.

Laudrup has said that it would take a couple of hundred million for the expectation of the club to be to achieve more than what we did last season (break in to the top 6), not to improve us as a team and as a club. It would take £5 million on a striker to improve us as a team, as we currently don't have a strikeforce.

Aspas wasn't our number one target, if he'd then there's a good chance he'd be second choice striker to somebody like Lukaku or Aubameyang.

Also been linked to Bojan today, and have made a £4.5 million bid for Diego Capel. Exciting times in Swansea.
