Cardiff City has released its new “two-tone” red home strip for their debut Premier League season in 2013/14.

The new strip has ditched last year’s black shorts in favour of a deep red shade but a bright red shirt with white trim remains.

Describing the kit – made by manufacturer Puma – the club described the new look as “unique, classic and stylish” but some fans immediately took to social media to express their distaste.

One example of the opposition came from Alex Chase (@Chas3yyy) on Twitter who said: “Absolutely shocking kit... Like its even (sic) pieced together from lost and found!”

Another user, called Joel Evans (@JoelEvans91) added: “Cardiff's new kit is shockingly bad. Only #CardiffCity could think different shades of red for the shirt and shorts would be a good idea. Foul.”

In marketing pictures to mark the release of the kit, members of Cardiff City's senior, Ladies, DS Active and Futsal teams modelled the strip.

In its statement accompanying the launch, the club said the new kit would make it “stand out” in the Premier League.

It said: “The club decided to maximise on the Puma King design and adopt a two-tone red home kit this season, helping us stand out in the Premier League crowd.

“The two Puma King stripes reflect the fans loyalty to the club, which is appreciated by all.

“We hope you all enjoy the results and look forward to seeing you all wearing your new shirt - with quite a few optional sleeve badges we think - as the season gets underway.”

The forthcoming season will be the second successive year Cardiff has worn red at home after a controversial rebranding exercise from blue last year.

There had been calls to return to playing in blue from many supporters, though the club’s major benefactor Vincent Tan is said to believe red is lucky.

Supporters can pre-order the new shirt from Friday May 31 through the club’s official Superstore website.

Agreed. Looks like only Liverpool will have a worse kit than us this year.

I think Wales online should get in contact with a malaysian media company and arrange for them to do the same poll over there, get some opinions from Tan's beloved market!

I'm ashamed by it. My first reaction is to walk away and cash in my ST.

I have a feeling this new kit will take the gloss of what should be the proudest moment in CCFC history only to be ruined by a cheap, quick kit design. We can only hope our away strip looks better now.

Absolutely shocking, surely they have to change this considering the amount of negative feedback generated in a single afternoon? They changed the shorts mid way through last season so they can change them now. And also, 'The two puma king stripes reflect the fans loyalty to the club' what does that even mean?

It doesn't feel like my club anymore!

The club I supported played in blue and didn't give a f**k what league we played in!
